Slash Brigade: A Madness Most Discreet 3/19/12

Photobucket

What Perv doesn't love sexy man on man action? The truth is so many of us Pervs love slash fic that we can't just be called a team. We're the whole damn brigade! Batten down the hatches, stock up on supplies 'cause the ladies of the Slash Brigade are here to rec some slash fic.

The Slash Brigade pick is...

Title: A Madness Most Discreet
Author: vampireisthenewblack
Chapters: 19
Words: 54,183
Reviews: 827
Pairing: Edward/Jasper
Summary: I'm pretty sure Edward Cullen hates my guts. It's the way he looks at me, the way he stares so intensely. If that were the extent of the problem it would be easy to ignore, but it's not. Because I'm pretty sure I'm in love with him. AH E/J Slash NC-17

Emmy
This story is one of those that is the perfect mix of sexy, fun and exploration AND a proper serious story, about finding friendship, love and being brave enough to reach out for it and not hide it away. This story is loosely divided into two parts. The second part of the story is what we are in now, in it Edward is finding it hard to deal with Jasper not willing to let anyone know what has happened between them, what is between them, who they are to one-another. And Jasper? Well Jasper is not really coping with the pressure.... The first half of the story is slightly frothier. Full of initially confused feelings, followed by LOTS of ruddy delicious experimentation and finding out just how much they click with one another.....

Thankfully that smutt-tastic experimentation continues into Part II of the story! **Phew**

Here is some of the extreme yummy from my favouritest fave of a chapter:

Edward's cock tastes faintly of rubber. I ignore it and keep licking and sucking him until he's hard again.

His fingers thread through my hair and he grips tight. I really do want him to fuck me, so I ignore his groan when I stand up. I turn away from him and look back over my shoulder. "Please," I whisper.

He shakes his head. "We can't."

"Yeah we can."

He frowns. "No." He brings himself close to me anyway.
Arching back against him, I rub my ass against his cock. It feels good, and I want more, so I reach back and grasp his hips and grind myself back on his cock, lifting up onto my toes and sliding down his body, trying to impale myself on his dick.

Edward groans. "Fuck, Jasper," he says, then he moves, giving me a shove so I have to let go of him and put my hands out to save myself.

I rest my cheek on the cold shower wall and sigh, disappointed, embarrassed, but then there is a slippery, blunt nudge between my ass cheeks as Edward holds his cock there.

He pushes in.

I'm prepared for the pain this time, and I grit my teeth and breathe though the burn. He gets halfway in before he stops, leaning heavily against my back, and our breathing is identical, heavy and measured and completely in sync.

"Oh god, Jas. We can't do this."

I shake my head. "Please." It's all I can get out.

He pulls back, real slow, and I whimper, but he pushes back inside again, going deeper. Moaning, he pulls out and thrusts back in again, faster this time, and with a series of quick thrusts he's all the way inside me. "Too good, Jas. Fuck, too fucking good."

My face is hot and I don't know if it's the shower or the fact that Edward has his cock in my ass again. The dull ache is almost overshadowed with the crazy sensation of being so full of him I feel like I might explode. It's even better without a condom, so much more sensation with every thrust. Just the thought of how much closer we are than last time has me clenching up hard in my guts and in my ass.

Hummana-hummana!!!! As you can see fecking delicious!!! So hot sexy yummy times? CHECK!
Slight angst and fear of potential heartichoke? CHECK
(but also!)
Cute, cute boys, acting cute?! CHECK!
Experimentation??!! CHECK!!
Teenage anxiety, fears and natural reactions? (hello reaction times and hair triggers!) CHECK!

Therefore its pretty much the perfect teenage slashy fic! Messy boys with messy lives, but so in love. I gave a slight angst warning above, but do remember I’m a total pussy. So it might not be for you!! But there is not mindless drama and stupid love triangles done for the sake of it, or ANY of that nonsense. Its all seems to me to be genuine teenage concerns and experiences. As Edward and particularly Jasper comes to terms with finding the love of his love so early on, and in the same sex. A great read, CHOCK-A-BLOCK full of smut and sexual explorations and hi-jinks! So what the feck are you waiting for? Go read it!!!! Now chapettes, of you go!

Jen
Oh, to be a teenager in high school. That wonderful time of life where you’re worrying about your appearance and imagining the horrible things everyone else might be thinking about you. Jasper in A Madness Most Discreet is convinced that Edward Cullen hates him, because Edward spends much of his school day scowling at Jasper. Just to make Jasper’s life that much more agonizing, he has a monster crush on Edward, and is faced with the prospect of spending an evening with the entire Cullen family because his sister is dating Emmett Cullen.

As it turns out, Edward doesn’t hate Jasper, he really, really likes him. Once that’s all cleared up, the boys progress to kissing, touching, and dry humping pretty quickly--all with their families downstairs. They are two horny teenage boys, and they take any opportunity they can to get their hands or mouths on one another. If there’s one thing I know about The Slash Brigade, it’s that we Pervs sure do enjoy some hs boy/boy loving. The fact that they’re having to steal moments together and keep secrets from their family and friends makes the times they are together all that much hotter.

If you think this is going to be a fluffy tale of hs love, you’d be mistaken. After all, this is vampireisthenewblack, queen of slashy angst. Like the other Pervs have mentioned, this part of the story is focusing on Edward’s desire to come out as a couple to his parents, and to be a couple openly at school. Jasper is terrified of what his parents will say or do, and has no desire to come out until he’s at college and away from Forks. Being teens, the boys aren’t the best communicators. Will they be able to find a compromise that satisfies them both? Or will this tear them apart? I know I’ll be staying tuned to find out.

Jess
As Emmy mentioned, this story is told in two parts. Part I is all about new discoveries, getting past the confusion of them both thinking the other hated them, and then giving in to all the lusty feelings they’d both been suppressing. And trust me, there are A LOT of yummy moments between these two high school boys.

In Part II, things have taken on a slightly more intense feel. The boys are in love and trying to navigate the very complex world of high school dating, coming out, and finding moments of alone time for all the hot sexy times they are both dying for! At times, I found myself really frustrated reading this, and that is not a reflection on vampireisthenewblack
storytelling abilities, it’s merely a reminder that both Edward and Jasper are young. Neither boy is confused about their sexuality, but Jasper is completely freaked about coming out, despite the fact that a fair number of people actually know. On the other hand, Edward has come off a bit insensitive at times as he pushes Jasper to come out to his parents and friends. They are both tired of sneaking around, but fear of the consequences - especially after another gay guy gets picked on in the school cafeteria - runs high. It’s at the height of my frustration that I remember that these boys are mere babies - both just sixteen. I tried to remember what my life felt like at that age and how confusing the world often seemed. Couple that with all the added pressure of coming out and being with your first boyfriend... yeah, it’s tough. I think vampireisthenewblack has done a truly lovely job balancing that frustrating - on both their parts (and mine, ha!) - with some very tender and HOT moments.

From chapter one, the UST is intense, a product of a lot of sidelong glances at school and tension filled classes, but fortunately for us, it’s short-lived. And good grief we get this little diddy as things start to get shaken up:

My fingers tighten on his hand, twisting into his fingers, and I squeeze because suddenly it's apparent I was wrong. Edward Cullen doesn't hate me. The same feelings I'm having—the need, the want, the tension—he's feeling, and his fingers squeeze back, and my heart leaps, and I lean forward without thinking, and so does he.

His lips are on mine, his mouth crushing mine, and I feel his tongue and open my mouth to him, and it's hurried, and wet and clumsy and it hurts a little when his teeth scrape my lip but I don't care because Edward Cullen is kissing me, I'm kissing him, and our fingers are still entwined and my free hand clutches at his chest, balling the fabric of his shirt in my fist, pulling, needing him to be closer.

He seems to understand, because he turns us so I am against the counter and he's pushing hard against me as his lips and tongue and teeth devour me. I feel tiny groaning sounds coming from his chest, vibrating against my hand, and I place it flat, rubbing, moving over him until I can feel a hard nipple beneath my palm through his shirt and I can't help but flick my thumbnail over it.

He growls and shoves his hips into me, hard, crushing me against the counter.

That’s only the beginning, and as the other Pervs have said, these two launch into full-scale discovery mode, testing, tasting, and teasing until they go all the way. vampireisthenewblack has woven a lovely tale, and I for one am anxious to see how she resolves Jasper’s fears and if Edward can wait long enough to see it through.

Teal

Teenage love...the thrill of discovery...of firsts...the excitement...the nerves...the joy...the fear. It’s all here. Sometimes it’s easy to be cynical and scoff at teen romances, especially slash teen romance because, seriously, how many gay teens are lucky enough to find someone to share their heart with? The thing is, despite all the challenges and inner turmoil that Jasper and Edward face in this story, vampireisthenewblack makes their budding relationship so wonderfully believable and happy. Oh, and totally tasty-cakes-hot.

I really love this fic because these two young men are on level ground when it comes to their sexual experience. While Edward is openly gay within his family, Jasper is extremely closeted. He struggles greatly with what will happen if and when his family finds out, but there are reassurances he never expected that come up along the way. It’s wonderful to see how this helps him thrive, and it really does warm the heart. Where Edward’s openness confounds Jasper at times, it helps Edward support Jasper and push him to open up emotionally. Both boys learn to see parts of themselves they’d still been holding back on, and they grow together.

Vampireisthenewblack is a gem of a slash writer, and if you are an Edward/Jasper lover...a Jasper love...or just a slashy Edward lover, you definitely need to be reading this one!

Posy

It’s hard enough being a teenage without coming to terms with being a gay man. I do love coming of age stories.

Jasper really trusts no one with his secret at the start of the story, but as chapters continue, more and more people come out in support of him. Unfortunately, the people who he really needs/wants support from, his parents, are people he won’t get support from. This informs nearly every interaction he has aside from those truly private moments he has with Edward. Jasper is a skeptic of the support from people and is unable to use the comfort that is at his fingertips.

What he and Edward have is intense. It’s clumsy and realistic and raw, but also intensely sweet. Reading this took me back in time. I remember these feelings that seemed to beat inside with every breath. Of course, this leads to some moments of not-so-mature thinking. Impulse control has never been a teenage forte. ;) Miscommunication happens, but Rosalie seems to sense when things have gone awry and pushes Edward and Jasper to fix things.

The social structure of high school plays a role in this as well. Best friends, proms, sitting at lunch tables, classes. In a small town when someone changes their patterns, people notice, and Jasper notices that people have noticed.

So now what? How will Jasper protect his heart, his secrets, and his relationship? Can he protect all three? I wonder what will have to give.

Summary
Slash Backslash 3.0 Entry. The night of the newborn attack, Jacob uses his shapeshifting ability to protect the ones he loves, changing their fates forever. Slash, AU. Edward/Jacob. Contains mpreg. See warnings.

Jeanne - I have been reading fan fic for a LONG TIME! In all that time I have very few squicks/hard limits; my hard limit has always been Mpreg. Leave it to ArcadianMaggie to be the first person to be able to push past my hard limit. I love this story from start to finish. Love this different version of Jacob. Love her re-imagining of the Quileute legend. I especially love the relationship between Edward and Jacob. Just *SWOON*

Jess - This was probably one of the most interesting one-shots (hopefully more) that I’ve read. I loved the entire premise and the new take on shape-shifting. The mpreg, which I was VERY skeptical of going in (like so much so I actually read a bit and then was like... nah, I’m not sure I can go there, but then decided I really needed to give it a go) was so well done. Jacob and Edward’s relationship was so rich and beautiful. And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but damn, I want more.

Jen - ArcadianMaggie is one of the best writers in the fandom, imo. Her writing is pure poetry, and this SBS entry is no exception. I love what she’s done with the shape-shifter legend- it just makes my heart sing. Edward/Jacob is my favorite slash pairing, especially when it’s wolf/vamp. The mpreg makes sense here, and I really really wanna see these two as daddies! Please, Maggie?!

Chele - This subject is such a hard sell for me as well, and I generally only accept it in fandoms where magic is involved, however, I never imagined the possibility of this kind of magic. It’s such a creative and amazing concept. This was absolutely beautiful, and I completely believed it. It blew my mind and captured my heart.

by Seylin
Summary
A relationship is like film, it has to be developed very carefully or it will be ruined. Slash.AH/AU. Jasper/Edward

Jeanne - Yeah, so I basically read through most of Seylin’s fic in the span of a day. There’s is a lot there and it made me a very happy girl. This fic in particular reminded me of what I love about Edward and Jasper. Here we meet shy, photographer Edward meeting smooth, confidant cowboy Jasper. I was swooning, giggling and grinning through ever word of this fic. The sex is hot and sweet. It’s definitely worth the read.

Emmy - So I am concurring with Jeanne again! As this is another great entry from Seylin for SBS 3.0. Sexy, smooth and sweet. A slashy delight to read!

Summary
Worst. Party. Ever.

Jeanne - OMFG drunken Karaoke!!! I am such an easy whore for Jake/Emmett. This fic hits me in all the right place. Now if TruceOver would just write MORE!

Chele - Love the way this fic brings the humor and the heat. Jake and Emmett are perfectly matched.

Jess - This was just so made of win! I absolutely adored watching the back and forth between these two... and when it finally happens... just yes and yes and yes!

Summary
Carlisle surfs the crashing waves off the North Shore of Oahu, but when it's Edward's swell on the horizon, will he wipeout, or ride him all the way? SLASH BACKSLASH 3.0 ENTRY. AH/AU/OOC.

Jeanne - Surferlisle? YES PLEASE!!! Dear sweet baby jesus do I love this fic. Aggressive Fuckhot Edward? Check! Shy, computer programmer/surfer Carlisle? Check! Adorably hilarious Emmett? Check! Brain melting sex that left me panting? MOTHERFUCKING CHECK!

Chele - I was owned by these four little words:
"Don't worry…it'll fit."
When I pulled myself up off the floor from being ded, I had to remind myself to breathe through the UST that threatened to set my pants on fire. These characterizations are so solid through these few words and details that it enhances the amazing porn and satisfies my every voyeuristic need.

Emmy - I think you all know by now that Edward/Carlisle is a fave pairing of mine! And this Edward? All sex strut, cocky attitude and jeans full of cock? Well yes. He is quite the scrummy bastard. I love the gentler, more vulnerable Carlisle. I also love how this fic was not all neat parcels. There were secrets and shadows contained within. I. Want. More! Please Moiz?

Jess - I am a total sucker for Carlisle... I’m not even sure when or how that happened, but I love him. So, what happens when you get a Carlisle who’s just a bit unsure, hotter than hell, and a surfer to boot? Jess. Ded. Like total flatline over the hotness.

Summary

Edward and Riley are roommates, but neither are very honest about their feelings... until Edward finally is. My entry for the SLASH BACKSLASH 3.0 CONTEST. Contains very explicit adult content. AH, SLASH.

Emmy - Finally!! Another Edward/Riley slashy fic! Fecking fabbio! This ticks lots of my boxes! VoyeurWard? - Check! Wankity wank action? - Check! Edward and Rileys sweaty and naked? Check and Check!!! So jump to it and read this fic! (plus its not rip your heart out and then shred it like confidential waste, like many of the other fics are in SBS 3.0, so give your tear ducts a rest and enjoy)

(ps - seriously folkies. When are you going to take the hint?! Write me some fecking fucking Edward/Riley slashtastic fics please!!! )

Summary
Slash Backslash 3.0 entry: "I could finally admit to myself that I was attracted to him. That I was more than attracted to him. That, shit, I wanted him more than I'd ever wanted anybody in my life. But he was my stepbrother..." Edward/Jasper

Emmy - Like Jess, I don’t want to give anything away! But cripes. I REALLY enjoyed this story. Unf.

Jess - I don’t even want to say much, because I’m afraid I’ll ruin this. So, let me just say this... the UST, the confusion, the OMG gah when it all comes together.... so freaking good.

Jen - Just read this. So good, so spooky, so sexy. I want more!

Chele - *Squees and points to this story with sealed lips*

by icmezzo
Summary
Jasper calls on Dr. Edward Cullen, Drain Surgeon, to help him with his leaking hose. Will Edward also fix his broken toilet? An entry for the Slash/Backslash 3.0 contest. Jasper/Edward. Rated M. AH. Comedy/Romance.

Jess - In a competition full of heavy stories, this one was such a breath of fresh air. The witty banter and puns had me cackling! So freaking funny... and seriously, who doesn’t love a handyman?!

Summary
My entry for Slash Backslash 3.0. "I try to memorize it all; the feel of his hard body against mine, the scent of him all around me. I know that I'll need these memories in the long months to come."Jasper/Garrett

Jess - This just hurt. Trapped in a Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell world, we see these two struggle and love. Really beautiful and sad.

Emmy - Ruddy heart clenching, this was! So beautifully written. But I was YEARNING for a happy ending. Please can we get some more?

Jen - full disclosure- I beta’d this o/s; I loved it from the first read. pange knows how to make it hurt so good.

Summary
SLASH BACK SLASH 3.0 ENTRY - Everyone makes mistakes, no one person is perfect, least of all Jacob. He made a mistake once, and it comes back to haunt him when he walks into a Seattle strip club and sees how it damaged Edward Cullen's life.

Jess - This o/s will rip your heart out. This chronicles the pain and suffering that two men - Edward and Jacob - live with because of one event in high school. So good. So sad. The angst notation on this one is spot on.

Emmy - This is yet another angsty piece of slashy writing. But it hurts. Cleverly done - to see how lust and rejection can break into pieces.

Summary
Jasper escapes Maria's army and heads north, looking for a change. In Chicago, he meets an unusual vampire who teaches him a different way to live and, by a twist of fate, to finally feel. Entry for the Slash Backslash 3.0 contest. Vamp slash, ExJ.

Jess - I loved the unique take on mating and Edward’s change that bmango brings to life. When things finally heat up... good lord... just, yeah. Go read it.

Chele - Just when I think I have no interest in reading Jasper/Edward together, a wonderfully talented author comes along and changes my mind in the best way. Refreshing perspective and red-hot erotica. A girl can’t ask for more than that.

Summary
"And if you send for me I will feel and kiss and hold you. And if you send for me I will share my beating heart. Doing everything with you will be alright. And make sweet love until the morning light." AH, Slash. Entry for Slash Backslash 3.0

Emmy - The pairing first drew me into this fic. It is not often that you see Carlisle and Seth paired together. A very interesting premise about denial, disappointment and heartbreak written. With some voyeur-style action thrown in. Written very well. We really feel what Seth feels. An angsty mix.

Chele - Excellent use of first person point of view. The desire and agony is palpable. It’s quick, it’s dirty and it’s desperate. I love this pairing and would really like to see more.

Summary
The Volturi find a new prospect in Forks. "All I know is, I think I'm gay for Edward Cullen, and in two days I'm supposed to die." Slash Backslash 3.0 entry. Post Breaking Dawn.

Jen - I’m not even sure how to describe this fic. I will tell you I abso-fucking-lutely loved it. Mike and Edward get to know each other during Mike’s imprisonment in Volterra. Aro wants to turn Mike, and recruit him for the Guard. Things get personal in the small cell, and eventually things get really intimate. Intense and heartwrenching.

Summary
Slash/Backslash 3.0 entry. When a Seattle surgeon's car breaks down near Port Angeles, he meets a hot mechanic who salvages the trip. But will barriers prevent Carlisle & Jake from turning a fun weekend into a true relationship? AH, C&J are adults, slash

Jen - Appearances can be deceiving; what could mechanic Jake possibly have in common with Jaguar driving Dr. Cullen? Crazy chemistry, for one thing. Jake and Carlisle share similar tastes in all sorts of things (and I’m really not trying to be dirty here). So hot seeing them work out that chemistry and fall in love.

Jess - Carlisle again... FTW... and paired with Jake... as a mechanic... yeah, you get the idea. This was a nice read. It wasn’t heavy on the angst, and it was full of the normal back and forth one would expect in new and challenging relationships. Things between these two are freaking hot! Get in on it!

So there you have it.

So much slashy fun, you're sure to find something that fits your taste. We certainly did.

Although we must admit the smallest disappointment that there wasn't more of this:

What can we say? We're pervs... want to write some for us?

Turn Me On: Tuesday Next by bmango

Photobucket

We want to know what turns you on, ladies! Which fics are rocking your world and are must reads for us Pervs? We want you to tell us what you like, what turns you on about this fic. Let’s talk about it over a glass of wine and get everyone reading it.

Title: Tuesday Next
Author: bmango
Status: WIP
Chapters: 3
Word Count: 6,063
Reviews: 45

Summary: This is a little series of scenes written from pictures that tuesdaymidnight has sent me. Basically PWP. All JxE. Enjoy!

Jeanne - There a handful of people whose recommendations I listen to without hesitation. The beautiful and talented Sadtomato is one of them. So when she recommended Tuesday Next I knew I had to set aside my concerns about the lack of realism in most BDSM fanfic and read it immediately. I am so glad I did.

Unlike a lot of BDSM fic I’ve read both in this and other fandoms Tuesday Next starts out focused on the play first, instead of romance. We meet these two men as Master and boy, Dominant and submissive. I love this not just because I love BDSM erotica, but because of the way bmango showcases how the play is a vital part of their relationship. They are not two lovers that engage in BDSM play. They are a Master and boy that are also in love.

That simple, deceptively small detail sets this story far apart from many other fics that are more focused on the romantic relationship and side line the sexy play as a plot device. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it has often left me wanting a story that is more focused on the BDSM play. Tuesday Next goes a long way to scratch that itch.

I follow his instructions without hesitation, laying prone with my hands stretched above my head, nearly reaching the rope around the couch leg. I feel small tugs on my left shoe as he loosens the laces before stretching my leg to the side, tying the laces to the bed post. He repeats the same action on my right leg before securing my hands with the rope.

"God, boy. You are so fucking beautiful for me," he whispers into the quiet.

Stretched before him, my ass in the air and my limbs restrained, I feel like I'm on display for him and I hope desperately he means what he says. I want to be beautiful for him.

I love how we get to see through Edward’s eyes. It allows us to see his need to not only please Master but also how the act of submission makes him feel beautiful and desired. The true spirit of submission is the act of relinquishing control to another (trusted) person. That makes the choice of casting Edward in the role of submissive so much more poignant and believable. More than any other character in Twilight, Edward Cullen feels the weight and compulsion to maintain control. It is his cross to bear, not to mention his intense desire to please those he admires. As a (hardcore) Edward fangirl I felt a strange kind of sympathetic relief from watching him submit to Master’s commands and desire.

bmango does an incredible job of showing the submissive mindset without short changing it and making Edward appear wounded or needy. He needs it but not because a lack of confidence or sense of self. Rather because he craves the release. Allowing someone to take control is far from a gesture of weakness but one of the most powerful gestures a person can make.

Then there is Master. I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’ve not referred to him as Jasper through the review. True, this is our favorite southern bad boy in the role of the Dom, but in many ways I felt I enjoyed the freedom of not seeing him as the cowboy. Here we see the powerful, calm and focused side of Jasper. The stagiest, the youngest major in the confederate army. This is the side of Jasper that I long to see more in fan fiction. His strength, raw power and brutality. These are all tempered with empathy and combine to make him a fabulous Master. He reads Edward so well, through each scene taking his lover right up to the line and back. It’s fascinating to read, intense and sexy. Really, I could ramble about this for days, but it’s better if you just read it yourself. Even if you’re new to BDSM fic, take a deep breath and dive in. I’ll be here to hold you hand.

Sadtomato - The first author’s note in bmango’s Tuesday Next reads, “Warnings: This is slash, my first shot at BDSM and is nothing but PWP.” As soon as I read that, I was sold--forget raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, those are a few of my favorite things. After reading through the three chapters already posted, I am hooked on Tuesday Next and hope you’ll give it a try, too.

Each chapter starts with a link to a photograph. The photos that inspire each chapter are beautiful and original (please keep them coming, tuesdaymidnight!), but what really makes each scene come to life is the prose. Jasper and Edward are lovers who play as Master and his boy, acting out the situations and/or positions suggested by the photographs.

What sets this story apart from other stories about D/s relationships is that Edward and Jasper see their play as fun, sexy, and special. There’s no drama, no kinky secrets, no shame and conflict. They’re just a normal, committed couple who just happen to have a few drawers full of sex toys. I love that they don’t have a mansion, a playroom, or a ton of specialized furniture. Their play feels real and sensual, and it draws me in every time.

Bmango describes Edward’s submissive mindset perfectly and succinctly, capturing exactly what appeals to him about this type of play:

Over the music I can still hear small clinks and the sounds of metal as he decides what implements to use from his drawers of toys. Every time we play, this here is perhaps the height of my emotional experience. The anticipation eating into me, my eagerness to be good and the surety that he will take care of me even if I'm not. After this moment, emotion disappears as it all condenses down into sensation. His touch, his voice, his scent. That is all I will know.

Did I mention the dirty talk? Oh, there’s some excellent dirty talk. It’s filthy without being raunchy, and it’s very clear how much Jasper’s words enhance Edward’s experience:

"You whore," he chastises, smacking my ass once more. "Beg me for it," he orders gruffly before changing his tone and reminding me. "Nicely."

"Please, sir. Oh, please fuck me," I beg, wanting him more than anything, wanting him to find his pleasure with me.

"I don't know. Have you been a good boy?" he asks quietly, his slick fingers still moving slowly in and out, bending to hit my prostate with almost every pass.

I love the kinky sex for what it is, but the tenderness and the obvious love between Edward and Jasper makes the sex hotter and more intense. Bmango doesn’t tell us about their love through extraneous dialogue, flashbacks, or inner monologue; instead she shows us through Edward and Jasper’s actions. That their relationship is marked by whips and chains rather than hearts and flowers doesn’t make it any less romantic. It’s sweet without being cloying, tender while staying true to real life.

Edward’s adoration for Jasper and eagerness to please his Master shine through every time they play. I see it in the way his body responds to whatever sensations Jasper chooses to dole out, in the highly charged looks they share while they’re playing, and in Edward’s trust and complete submission.

Jasper’s affection for Edward comes through with every tender touch, every act of care during and after their play. Whether he’s adjusting Edward’s handcuffs during a rough scene or massaging his muscles after a long one, he is careful and reverent with his lover’s body and his submission. It’s a great example of safe BDSM play, but it also serves to illustrate how much Jasper cares for Edward.

Bmango classifies this story as PWP (that’s “Plot? What Plot?” or “Porn Without Plot” for the uninitiated), but I have to disagree. There’s no big conflict or drama here, but I think in this case the porn is the plot--it’s the story of two richly drawn characters loving each other in unconventional but beautiful ways.

Drenched: A Song in 36 verses. Here comes the rain again / falling from the stars / drenched in my pain again / becoming who we are. AH / Slash

Jess - Drenched is probably one of the most beautiful stories I’ve read in a long time. It is utterly heart-wrenching, but the deep love that unfolds is breathtaking. Drenched is the story of two men who find each other... one was oblivious and the other wasn’t. The story starts with Jasper telling about the many firsts he experiences with Edward. You know from the beginning that one of these characters is going to die...

MissHyde makes that clear in her very first author’s note. And yet, from the very first chapter, I was completely sucked in. I’m not sure if it was the way in which she told the story, the voices of her characters, or what, but I was literally glued to my couch for about an hour and read until I was snot-sobbing and bleary eyed. And even then, I just sat there, staring down at my phone, wishing for more. Even a week later, I’m still thinking about it. That to me is the way a truly great story should stick with you.

In some ways, I’m at a loss for words as to how to even describe or talk about this beautiful piece of work. As I mentioned above, virtually every chapter begins the exact same way:

“The first time...”

“The first time I saw Edward, I didn't notice him.”

“The first time I touched Edward was when I reached out to shake his hand as I introduced myself.”

“The first time Edward hugged me was after an especially hard night at the center one Saturday.”

On and on... until it doesn’t. And it’s when the words turn to “The last time...” you know your heart is truly breaking.

This story is so compelling. Edward and Jasper’s relationship is so real, so visceral. With every short chapter, I felt like I was in their lives, observing, growing, loving with them. There’s no easy way to show this, but here’s one of my favorite chapters, and one of them major turning points in the story.

The first time we cried together was after I had warmed up a bit and the shivering had stopped. He climbed into my lap and held me so damn tight while he sobbed in my arms and my tears ran into his hair. He ranted about how unfair it was, how he hadn't cared before, how he had been able to accept it, how he had lived with it for his whole life, and now that he had found someone to live for, it was all going to be taken away. We sat there for a long time after the tears had stopped, comforting each other in silence. There were no words that would ease the pain.

Please give this story a chance. Wusspervs, read this. Yes, it’s sad. Yes, it will hurt. But it would be such a loss to miss out on this. For the non-slash readers, seriously, read this. It will warm your soul at how beautiful a loving relationship can be. This is a story I will almost certainly read again. Thank you MissHyde for sharing your beautiful words with us.

Jen - Nothing about Drenched is typical. Right from the start MissHyde makes no bones about the fact that this is going to be a hard story to read: it’s labeled tragedy and the a/n states that the story does include character death.

I love the format that MissHyde uses for this story. The chapters are longer than a 100 word drabble, but the thirty six chapters total 14,425 words, not much longer than some one shots. The spare writing style enhances the emotions present in the story, and I really love when the format becomes an integral part of the story. As Jess mentioned above, the repeated use of ‘The first...’ at the beginning of each chapter is a very powerful tool in this short story.

Drenched may be short on words, but it certainly isn’t short on emotions. As MissHyde builds the love story between Jasper and Edward, Jasper’s words become more intense, and his longing and love for Edward become so palpable that you feel them deep within your heart. Their love for one another is so deep, it’s hard to remember that they only had about two years with each other. Every day, every moment they had together was so meaningful, especially once Jasper understood the nature of Edward’s illness; even when they argued they were truly living in the moment.

In a story with such a heavy theme you wouldn’t expect lots of carefree smutty times. Every first- kiss, bj, making love- was so rich, so important, just as every last time would eventually be.
Simple moments, such as time spent kissing, are as beautifully depicted as their times making love.

I used to quite like the scruff in the old days, liked the feel
of it against my lips when he kissed me, or dragged his face down my body,
looking for new spots to lick. But now, the sensation of this silky damp skin
was too inviting to resist. I started at a spot just below his ear, and kissed my
way along his jaw, tenderly, slowly, trying to show him my love without
words. When I reached his mouth I stayed there a while. He still loved kissing;
it was one thing he could still do. So I kissed him and he kissed me and for a
little while we forgot about everything else.

Knowing up front that someone dies does not take anything away from the story. Like me, you may even find yourself forgetting that someone will die. By the time you remember that little Tragedy tag up above, you’ve already fallen hard for the two men in the story. When I realized that things were accelerating, I wished so much for things to slow down, as if I could prevent Edward’s death simply by reading slowly.

I know many Twific fans avoid stories with the death of a main character. Sure, avoiding Drenched might prevent you from shedding some tears, but in so doing you’ll also deprive yourself of a rich and beautiful piece of fanfiction.

Liz - I love a story that makes you feel something powerful, whether that is rage, or lust, or pride, or sorrow. Drenched gives us all of those things. Rage that diseases exist (although Edward’s is fictional) that can rip our loved ones from us too young, lust for the passion Jasper and Edward share, pride in how beautifully Jasper stands by Edward to the very end, and sorrow that they didn’t have a chance to live a longer lifetime together.

A poignant countdown opens each chapter with Jasper recounting a series of their firsts, and then, as MissHyde gently prepares us for the worst, with Jasper’s recollections of ‘lasts,’ tears us to bits at the same time leaving us in awe.

The first time we cried together...

It seems disrespectful to refer to what they share as ‘lemons.’ The tenderness and love between them is palpable, and will leave you panting and rubbing at the ache in your chest when you realize where this all will end. Terribly, beautifully heartbreaking.

Teal - It’s gonna be so heartbreaky, I said. But it’s sooo good, these Pervs told me. Technically, we were all right.

I see you out there, you gluttons for angst, tragedy, and character death. Well then, get to reading. This fic is truly a tearjerker, but it’s worth the emotional investment to meet these characters, watch their love blossom and develop, and see how they cope with falling in love when you know it’s all going to be stolen away from you at any moment. Jasper and Edward are both so sweet here, and it’s amazing how strong they each remain through every new discover, trial, and the eventual end that neither wants to face. I really enjoyed how genuine their struggles felt, especially as they became tangled with their desire to spend every possible moment together while still giving time for Edward to spend with his family and relish those fleeting moments as well.

If you’re a crier, have your tissues ready, and if you’re not...you might still want to keep some handy (I won’t tell anyone if you use them). The love story is supreme, but the tragedy is not exaggerated. I thank MissHyde for sharing a little piece of her talent and her heart with us here.

Title: The Measure of A Man
Author: PolkaDotMama
Status: Complete
Chapters: 1
Word Count: 9649
Summary: Jasper is drawn in by a small tease of skin that keeps his interest in a man he'd normally dismiss outright. Will it keep his interest long enough to get him past his personal bias? OOC, AH, M - SBS contest entry.

Guest Perv: Arcadian Maggie - The Measure of a Man is right up there on my list of favorite one shots. It’s one of those re-readable stories for me, the kind you can go back to time and time again and enjoy just as much the fifth read through as the first. It’s an Edward/Jasper story, and at the time it was written, the Edward was one that had rarely, if ever, been seen in the fandom before—in one character’s words, “a huge nelly queen.” He’s flamboyant and theatrical; he draws attention, and he dresses in drag.

They meet when closeted-at-work Jasper has a business dinner with colleagues at the Geisha house. Part of the way through the meal he realizes Momo, one of the geishas who performs the tea ceremony, is actually a man. He finds himself fascinated by her and by the sliver of skin at the hairline left intentionally bare of makeup.

Momo's voice was light and airy with a shyness about it. Most of the men that I knew that dressed in drag were always given away by their voices, but not her. Her voice showed not a hint of masculinity.

When Momo turned to speak with Hale, I saw the most alluring bit of naked skin at the base of her neck in the shape of a W. The points reached her upper back where her ornate, red kimono was purposefully arranged to reveal this most erotic area. I wanted to reach out and caress it, but I resisted.

PolkaDotMama makes her sound so enticing, even I wanted to kiss her neck! At the end of the meal, Jasper meets the man under the makeup, and Edward gives him his card, asking him out for drinks.

It takes a while for Jasper to contact him, and even longer for their physical relationship to develop while Jasper struggles with his attraction to a man who is far from his usual “type.”

What I adore about this story, aside from the always beautifully written sensuous and erotic love scenes, is PolkaDotMama’s insightful examination of our ideas about masculinity. As a culture, we’ve broadened our ideas of what it means to be feminine considerably; it’s past time we did the same for the men.

Jasper’s brother Peter puts it best:

"Edward is a man whether he's a leather daddy or dresses in drag. He has a dick and balls and an ass that you apparently enjoyed fucking, so knock it off. Do not take his man card away from him because he's swishy from time to time, okay?"

I was silent, taking in everything my wise brother said.

Very softly, he continued. "You're both gay men. Men! You certainly wouldn't like it if you were outright dismissed because you were too masculine. Why are you discriminating?"

Even with his discomfort, Jasper never once asks or expects Edward to change. He recognizes his issues are his own and works to overcome them. And as Jasper learns to accept Edward, he grows to accept himself as well. You’ll love reading about their anniversary and how Jasper handles his boorish co-worker at an office party.

And you’ll fall in love with Momo too.

Jen - If you read slash, then chances are you’ve read at least some of PolkaDotMama’s work. The Measure of a Man is my very favorite o/s of hers (she doesn’t make it easy to choose!), and each time I’ve re-read it I discover new things.

The Measure of a Man is the story of two men who are 100% comfortable with who they are. Jasper’s view of himself is challenged when he finds himself attracted to Edward, a man more feminine than any other man Jasper had ever been attracted to. Jasper is open to exploring his attraction to Edward, even while he puzzles over it. He is not only attracted to Edward, but also to Edward when he’s in his Momo persona.

As their relationship progresses, Edward seems to sense Jasper’s uneasiness, but never pushes, or gets defensive. The reader does not know if they’ve ever discussed it; I tend to think not. Edward’s gentle nature allows Jasper to work through it on his own.

Like Jasper, I didn’t know what to make of a somewhat effeminate Edward at first. And like Edward with Jasper, PolkaDotMama gentles the reader into accepting and loving Edward just the way he is. Because so much about Jasper’s attraction to Edward is different than what he usually experiences, their relationship also unfolds in a way that is different from the way that Jasper normally operates.

The pacing is just right, and together with the time period that the o/s covers, their relationship grows naturally and realistically. Jasper’s phone calls to his brother, Peter, always stand out when I read The Measure of a Man because of the way they form such a parallel to what Jasper feels about Edward. The calls give the story a wonderful structure, marking Jasper’s uncertainty and then acceptance about his feelings for Edward.

I’m amazed at how PolkaDotMama gets me to visualize something so clearly that I feel as though I’m looking at a painting or seeing something right before my eyes. Whether she’s describing Momo’s kimono, Jasper’s phone calls to his brother, or that highly erotocised sliver of Momo’s neck, the descriptions are incredibly beautiful.

I was giving him exactly what he wanted. And he was unwittingly giving me precisely what I wanted.

That unspoiled section at the nape of his neck.

Naked.

So beautiful.

I reached for it, tracing the W that had been there the night that we met. He turned around and met my eye, knowing exactly what I was doing. He smirked before he turned back.

It was the first time I'd touched that spot.

I'd dreamed of this moment since that first night, but finally, I was brushing my thumb over his perfect skin.

I’m finding it hard to put into words how much I love this fic. From the start Jasper speaks of Edward with such reverence; it just makes my heart expand. PolkaDotMama puts me right into Jasper’s head where I can see just how erotic everything about them as a couple is.

She sat up and turned, kneeling in front of me to reveal the W on her neck and upper back.

It was exquisite. Her pale skin looking tanned next to the white makeup. I kissed her naked flesh. It was pristine.

Momo lifted her kimono as I lavished her neck with attention, and as she moved to all fours, the illusion was broken.

Edward was there with his beautiful ass and his gorgeous dick that I now had in my hands. He was all man, whether he dressed as Momo or not.

Besides falling in love and finding a partner in Edward, Jasper learns that he does not have to have such strong boundaries between his public and private selves. In accepting that he could love an effeminate man, I think Jasper came to realize that he could expose some of his private self. In reading The Measure of a Man, I not only enjoyed a lemony story, but expanded my notions of sexuality and eroticism.

Emmy - I cannot remember when I first read this story. But I do remember thinking when I first read it that it really stood out amongst the smutty lemony slashy one-shots out there. Not because it is not slashy or lemony or smutty. Because it is all three - very nicely and very unashamedly so. But because The Measure of a Man
explores most effectively, in my humble opinion, what it means to be masculine, feminine and sexual. It was certainly the first twi-fic that I had read that broached this.

This is not a forced feminisation fic. Nor a fic about a drag queen. It is instead about a man, Edward, who works as a geisha, likes to have a laugh, go out for dinner, go out to dance, drink, live, love and have sex with his boyfriend. His job as a geisha is just part of who he is. But it also reflects the fact that he is not a butch or “manly man”. He’s secure in his own skin, and is who he is, a man comfortable with his feminine side. But a man who is not looking to be treated like a lady. What is actually interesting to me is how secure and comfortable Edward is in his own skin. Yet Jasper the narrator, isn’t. He’s not able to be the ‘real’ Jasper - as he’s still in the closet to all his workmates. Work Jasper and Outside-of-Work Jasper are very different people. Whereas Edward is just Edward. Even if he plays a role in work. Jasper is playing a bigger role at his work.....

You might wonder how is this a sexy fic, particularly when some women read slashy fics purely for the delicious imagery of their imaginary favourite characters or their favourite actors getting it on. But I found this fic highly erotic. Jasper worships Edward in the bedroom. Never-ever-never have I found a body part so revered and made so sexy as the way Jasper describes the skin at the back of Edward’s neck, just under his hairline. Jasper is sensual and erotic with Edward through his tender exploration of touch. But wowser is their union intense and beautiful. Very, very sexy. Including some come-play as Jasper obsesses over certain body parts and Edward takes some control from the bottom and goes after what he wants.

This is a very easy fic to fall under the spell of. It has got a beautiful love story at its centre, wrapped in fervent and powerful loving. Its a delight to read. Edward’s flamboyance and touches of femininity are just part of who he is, but they open Jasper's eyes to so much more.

Jess - Appearances can be, and often are, deceiving. This was the situation Jasper Whitlock found himself in when he was out with colleagues after a long day of meetings. After being served tea, Jasper realized that the geishas everyone assumed to be women... were actually men.

Momo - aka Edward - is an effeminate man who moonlights as a geisha to help pay off college loans. Every gesture, flick of his wrist, shift or movement while dressed as Momo screams woman... and yet, the fact that Edward is a man rocks Jasper’s carefully built world.

Jasper had always been into “butch” men, as he so aptly calls the bulky, very “masculine” sports types he’s dated in the past. But as Edward becomes a fixture in his life, Jasper has to wrestle with what really defines “masculinity” or “manliness.” This issue is the heart of this very beautifully written one-shot.

As a reader, I found myself struggling alongside Jasper at this characterization of Edward. I think I often equate him to being macho or dominant in some way, but this Edward blew me aware. He was a walking dichotomy of effeminate behavior and man. How does someone like Jasper wrap his mind around behaviors - extended pinky finger, high pitched laugh, exuberant and flamboyant dancing, bikini underwear, skin tight jeans - he has never equated with someone he would date.

I absolutely love how Polkadotmama makes us feel all of Jasper’s struggles. Like I said, I was confused by my own feelings about Edward, and yet I found myself longing for Jasper to just get over it.

And slowly, he does. A heavy-hitting conversation with his brother, Peter, forces him to really examine his own discriminatory behavior. He accuses Jasper of projecting his own insecurities about what it means to be male onto Edward... effectively taking his man card because he’s “swishy” sometimes.

“He was a man, and I needed to stop comparing him to a women even if that's how I initially met him.”

What’s more beautiful, though, the very things that had put doubt in Jasper’s mind are the things he comes to love most about Edward. Just as they were for me.

Liz - It’s hard for me to put my finger on what I love most about The Measure of a Man. I love well written, emotive slash, of course, but there’s more here for me. I love the idea that we can all find fulfillment if we spend less time worrying about pursuing our ‘type’ and more time appreciating beauty and affection where it presents itself.

Gay Jasper sees the bare skin of a geisha’s neck and is intrigued after he discovers Momo is actually Edward. Going against his usual butch ‘type’ and instead pursuing his uncharacteristic attraction for effeminate Edward, he discovers that love and passion are less about the packaging and more about the soul within, and about being who you are. Jasper comes to love all that Edward is, beyond the stereotypical definitions of masculinity, and even beyond the stereotypical definitions of homosexual attraction. If a gay man is sexually aroused by another man’s female persona, what does that mean?

The intimacy between these two is very real-feeling, and written without the usual over-the-top lemontasticness we find in a lot of slash. Instead, PolkaDotMama gives us the tenderness and care you would expect from first-time lovers with more between them than an interest in a hot fuck.

Watching the entire time, I trailed a finger down his chest, circling his pale pink nipples until they responded to my touch. His eyes fluttered shut, and I smiled at the delicate movement. Trying to avoid where he was ticklish, I traced his lightly muscled abdomen, thumbing over his belly button. As I moved lower, his stomach quivered so I moved quicker until my fingers hit the neatly trimmed nest above his cock.

...He was absolutely beautiful.

I love that PolkaDotMama gives us characters that feel real, instead of just smutty cardboard cutouts with familiar names. As absurd as it may feel to read about Geisha Momo/Edward and closeted, uptight Jasper, I came away with a smile and renewed appreciation for taking love where you find it.
