Originally Erotic: Facilitators

Photobucket

It's hard to believe that with all the wonderful, smutty fan fiction out there that we get time to read published books too. You should know by now that the Pack Pervs are nothing if not insatiable smut hounds. We can never enough of well written steamy sex, and we’re willing to pay for it if it’s worth it. Here we will team up to recommend some published erotica and erotic romance novels that are guaranteed to get you hot and bothered.

Title: Facilitators
Author: Audrey T.F., Mera N.J.
Author’s Contact: embracethetrope@gmail.com
Genre: Romance, Erotica
Cost: $ 1.99 (ebook only)
Book Description: Eva, a woman thoroughly in control of her life (though not of her weakness for designer shoes), prefers her romantic interludes to be devoid of romance. Theo, a man whose dating efforts have been sabotaged by his dilapidated Corolla, hasn't had any interlude in almost a year. When both contact Facilitators, a company specializing in arrangements of the interluding kind, Theo and Eva scratch their respective itches -- and then find themselves wondering what, if anything, happens next.

A sweet and spicy (mostly spicy) semi-traditional take on romantic comedies, Facilitators faces head-on the most urgent question of contemporary society: How many one-night-stands are required to make a relationship?

Jess
I stumbled onto this lovely little novella on twitter not long after it was released. As I scanned the summary and saw the price, I thought it was worth taking a chance. Thank goodness I did, because Facilitators is all kinds of sexy. It tells the story of two people - Eva and Theo - who meet at a “Facilitators Mixer,” essentially a way for professionals to meet and do whatever it is they want... namely hook-up in a casual, safe environment.

Let’s start with Theo. He’s a stockbroker living under a pile of student loan debt and who hasn’t been laid in nine months. He’s stressed, a bit down, and frustrated beyond belief with his love - or lack thereof - life. His friend Henry - quirky, funny, and relatively well off - enters the mix, and after giving Theo a hard time about how uptight he is, hands hima business card for Facilitators.

Eva is an upper class girl who works hard, loves an awesome pair of shoes, and no strings attached sex, or as she puts it, “a ships passing in the night” kinda girl. She has reasons for this, but it takes a nudge - shove - from her cousin, Julie, and some awesome sexy times with Theo for her to come around.

Facilitators is a fun glimpse into the age old question - can people have casual, consequence-free sex? Can two consenting adults keep emotions and attachment and all the messy feelings that come with relationships out of the mix and just enjoy the way two bodies - and trust me when I say these two seriously know how to do it - come together? I’m certainly not going to tell you the answer, but let me just say, the exploration and the unfolding of the story is a pure delight, with ups and downs and pushing friends and family.

As the girls will mention below, these two can make things happen in the back of a cab... in the bedroom... on the table (regardless of a gorgeous crystal vase)... in the kitchen... in the shower... pretty much anywhere.
Theo lay back down, putting his arms on either side but keeping his body weight off of her. “There’s no rush.” He pressed soft kisses along her throat, and then nipped the curve of her ear before saying, “You’re always in such a hurry that I haven’t had much of a chance to prove I’m good at this.”
Eva’s eyes, which had been drifting closed, flew open in disbelief. “Are you kidding me? You’ve proved it over and over again - it’s been four days!”
“I’ve proved I’m good at fucking you,” he agreed, with obvious amusement. “But I haven’t prove that I’m good at this.” He licked the sensitive skin at the juncture of her neck and shoulder. Eva moaned as fresh excitement shivered from the point of contact to her belly. “Or this.” One warm hand traveled up the sweep of her hip to her waist, over her ribs, and paused on her breast. His fingers trailed lightly over the outer curve; she nearly jumped with reaction. “Or this.” He lowered his mouth to her nipple and began to suck.
And that’s tame, folks. Theo and Eva are a hot mess together... and even worse apart. Facilitators is a short, quick read that will leave you fully satisfied and very happy you spent the money on this lovely little novella.

Chele
Facilitators is a refreshing take on adult romance, with skilled writing, a sexually empowered female lead, and more red-hot smut than you can shake a pair of Louboutins at.

The story’s title refers to what may be the most kick-ass dating service in the history of ever. Eva and Theo are both clients who meet at a mixer, are matched ingeniously, and head for an evening of hedonistic sexual itch scratching. Evening turns to late night, then early morning, and even a mathematician would lose count of the number of orgasms they give each other. It would almost seem unbelievable if the chemistry wasn’t so well articulated. The realism in their erotic exchanges holds you in the moment and captures the range of emotions and sensations from the first encounter - frantic, frenzied - to the comforting, but no less intense later couplings after they’ve discovered how to play each other’s bodies like fine-tuned instruments.

Facilitators is a quick read - I consumed it whole in a little over an hour - but its brevity doesn’t undermine its content. These characters are well defined, and the story is whole. It’s also perfectly pornographic, and wholly heartwarming. A truly guilty pleasure and a special treat.

Teal

Eva is the quintessential big-city girl. She’s career-driven, successful, and can’t resist a killer pair of expensive and extremely high designer heels. Sexually confident but not in the market for a relationship of any kind, Eva’s idea of a great night is of the “get off, get out, and get on with my day” philosophy. Then, there’s Theo. A little more tender, it would seem on the outside, and it would appear he’d actually like a relationship...but getting laid is priority number one after nearly a year of rejection. He knows he’s attractive (and skilled between the sheets), but getting anywhere with women in his social circle just hasn’t been happening. Despite being good at what he does, the economy is rough, but he’s working hard at it everyday. For Theo, Facilitators is a guaranteed opportunity to end his dry spell, no questions asked.

What Eva didn’t expect was to enjoy herself so thoroughly after, err...meeting Theo, or that she would be tempted to see him again. That’s not her thing. Theo certainly didn’t expect to hit it off so well with a woman only to be shot down just when he thought he had his in. Don’t fret, though; Theo is a persistent and quite persuasive guy. And has anyone mentioned quite generous in the sack? Yeah, that too.

It would seem understandable that Eva gives in to try a little more.

We all know “friends with benefits” or even just “acquaintances with benefits” never works out without complications, and this is no exception. Their adventure in sex and what relationships mean is steamy, fun, and quite surprising at times. The story overall is well-crafted and definitely a page-turner (or should we say screen-flicker in the case of an ebook?), and an all around great read. These authors have taken their experience and crafted it into an original piece of erotica that is well worth its very reasonable price.

When Jess brought this book up I was titillated. I’m fairly new to erotic original fiction. Before reading fanfic my reading habits were rather PG, so I’m always looking for a good dirty rec, and this is a great smutty read. I love how the friendship builds between Theo and Eva through their sexual chemistry. Even though the length is short I never felt the story was rushed or missing anything. Refreshing and entertaining to say the least.

The characters are well developed and easy to enjoy. I found Theo very endearing and Eva a spitfire. I love the use of secondary characters; Henry, Theo’s best friend, and Eva’s cousin, Julie, gave great balance to the main characters. The sexual tension is delish and the smut had me squirming, not going to lie.
Eva swung the door shut behind him, and the sliding warmth of his skin as he secured his arms around her, full lips, skimming her cheek, teasing a delicious flutter all over. Theo’s hands slipped to cover all the places she wanted him, the slow-building tug and lock of his mouth delightfully sweet. Oh God. That. This. Just so good.
We see Theo and Eva grow and evolve into a natural relationship, even if they are the last to know. I have sections bookmarked to visit again later and would highly recommend this story especially at such an affordable price!

Title: Teahouse
Author: Emirain, coloring by Chii-chan
Author site: Teahouse.com
Author’s Twitter: @teahouscomic
Author’s Facebook: Teahouse-Comic
Genre: WebComic; Fantasy, Yaoi (aka gay romance)
Cost: Online: Free serial webcomic; Print copies and other merchandise starting at $10/chapter. Teahouse updates every Wednesday at Teahousecomic.com
Book Description: Teahouse is a weekly yaoi (adult) web comic about characters living in a brothel.

Jeanne - I’m a multigenre whore. Books, movies, tv, comic books, anime, I love it all. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that I’m always on the look out for new, smutty, things to read and love. I stumbled across a picture of a panel from Teahouse while on an anime LJ community
dedicated to Yaoi.

Yaoi, also known as Boy Love, is a genre of Japanese comic books (also known as manga) and animated films/tv shows dedicated to male male romance. Yep, long before we even know what slash was the Japanese have been making an art of it for years. Not only is it acceptable topic, Yaoi is a multimilliondollar business that’s only grown since us Westerns have discovered it.

There are adventurous and creative artist/writers here in the West that have been inspired by this genre and began to create their own stories, art and original works. Teahouse is, in my opinion, at the forefront of this new Western Yaoi movement.

These talented ladies have created an Asian inspired art comic that also has very tangible western influences. Teahouse is a gorgeous comic, but it is also a complex story with well developed characters. The network of interconnections, relationships and histories create an enthralling story that will keep you wanting more every week.

This is a webcomic, which means it is posted for free online. That’s right, you can read all of Teahouse for free on their website. You can also buy hardbound additions of the comic, that come with additional artwork and histories for the characters. *whispers* Also with extended sex scenes.

Oh, yeah, did I mention there’s sex? FUCK YES! These ladies do not skimp in that regard at all. When you first go to the site you have to past an age restriction block and trust me when I say that it is needed. This is an adult only comic in every way imaginable. After all, the story takes place in a brothel.

The Teahouse is a house of ill-repute, with a host of tantalizing courtesans to tempt any patron of any persuasion. Each character is a unique, though some stand out more than others. Among my favorites are Lord Reed (who reminds me of how I imagine a pre-death of his mate Marcus), and the new boy in the house Rory (who has copper-red hair, green eyes and blushes like mad. Oh yeah, you know who he reminds me of).

The interactions between these two have had me panting on the fucking floor, and NO I am not exaggerating. Their first sex scene is among some of the most beautiful erotic art I have ever seen in my life.

If you’re a fan of slash, give Teahouse a try. If you think the images in this post are beautiful, give Teahouse a try. If you trust us when we say it was make love to your eyes, break your heart and make you laugh liquid out your nose, GIVE TEAHOUSE A TRY!

Teal - My experience with comic books up until this point has been limited to super heroes and Transformers. I’ve enjoyed those thoroughly and benefit from having great nerdy friends who read comics and share with me, but I have never seen anything like Teahouse. Not that I didn’t know this kind of thing existed; I just didn’t expect it to be so good!

Right from the start, I was captivated for so many reasons. First of all, it should be clear from the graphics included in this recommendation that the art is simply brilliant. Each character is unique and carefully crafted, and the ways they react and move through the panels are completely natural. They are 100% human. The care and thought that must have gone on to develop each unique personality and history simply astounds me. It’s not just the characters, though; every scene, background, shading, and detail are carefully planned and colored, truly making this the full package.

Set in an upscale brothel in the fictional land of Ivore, the first pairing we’re introduced to is Sir Rhys and Axis. Mouthy, bad boy Axis is somewhat of hot item in the Teahouse, but until Rhys came along, it was only with women. Visit Axis’ Formspring account, and you’ll quickly learn how much he loves ladies...and boobs. Rhys, however, is an obviously powerful, obviously wealthy client who takes what he wants without asking, and recently, Axis was his pick. Now, Smartmouth will quickly deny any accusations of being homosexual, or even bi, but he sure doesn’t seem to mind when Rhys is buried inside him, making him come hot and hard. These two are a very fun, sexy adventure to watch happen, especially when Rhys’ true identity is revealed, but they’re not the only focus of this cast.

As the story develops, you learn about the background of many characters, the dynamic between them, and other secrets and complications that come about. There are M/F and M/M relationships and encounters, and each one is equally exciting and captivating. Deep (and long denied) sexual tension is a key factor for one pair in particular, but when you’re in a brothel...well, you have to please your clients, don’t you?

Honestly, this comic is at near-obsession levels for me. I’ve gone back and read it several times, not to mention ordering print copies of the chapters that I can covet endlessly. (These also include special print-only extras!) These are the kind of characters who deserve your attention, and hopefully as time goes on, more fanfiction will arise as well (yes, I’ve looked).

Trust me when I say that if you give it a try, Wednesday will become your new favorite night of the week. There’s something for everyone here...particularly our slash-loving friends!

Enjoy!

Jen - When Jeanne first shared the link to Teahouse with us I wasn’t sure if it would be my cup of tea (bad pun intended). I’ve read and loved some graphic novels but have never really been a comics girl. Jeanne could probably lead me anywhere, though, and when I followed her to Teahouse I immediately fell in love with each of the characters and stayed up well past my bed time to read every last posted page. Now I spend Wednesdays giddy with the anticipation of a new page being posted.

The drawings are absolutely gorgeous. Whether it is a full color page, a line drawing, or a duo-tone image I enjoy looking at them again and again. As Teal mentioned, each chapter is available in paperback form. As gorgeous as the panels are online, it is amazing to hold the book in your hand and study each image up close. One of my favorites is the image on the cover of chapter two. Each week I’m astounded by how much of the story is conveyed solely through images. Words are used sparingly and pointedly. The story is just so very layered and complex.

One of the things I love the most is that it’s really an ensemble cast. Each time I think one particular character or pairing is my favorite, the next panel features different characters who become my new favorites.

I can, however, say that Linneus is definitely my biggest love. Linneus has lived at the Teahouse since he was a young boy--handed over to Mr.Atros, the owner of the house, by his father to pay off a debt. Xanthe Atros is the son of Mr.Atros. He befriends Linneus, although his father has commanded him to train Linneus as a servant. Now Xanthe runs the brothel, and Linneus is one of the courtesans. Their relationship is complicated. There’s the boss/employee part of it, friend or near brother aspect, and finally, the UST and jealousy component. As of yet we’ve not seen anything physical between the two of them, but the unspoken attraction fairly crackles in their interactions. Xanthe is jealous of Linneus’ customers, yet he knows that Linneus brings in steady customers. To borrow a line of Bella’s, Linneus could surely say ‘Your mood swings are giving me whiplash.’

How to describe Linneus? Well, at first glance you might think he’s a woman. He’s adorably petite, with pink hair, and an affinity for lots of jewelry and baubles. He’s currently entertaining Gilder, a rough looking, knife wielding, scar bearing customer, who calls Linneus ‘dove’ and has pretty much swept Linny off his feet. Um, yeah. I'm in love with Gilder, too. I have read the three pages of their interactions innumerable times, and I am hoping hoping hoping that we’ll get to see more of them in the extra pages that will be included in the hard copy of chapter three.

So, join us pervs and check out Teahouse. Wednesdays will never be the same!

Author’s Facebook: Ashlyn-Kane
Genre: Gay Romance
Amazon: $16.99 (hardback) $6.99 (ebook)
Dreamspinner: $16.99 (hardcover) $6.99 (ebook)
Book Description: Jake Brenner has too many wild oats to sow to fall in love—or so he claims. Besides, he's much too busy with his band, the Wayward Sons, to go looking for romance. His reticence has nothing to do with his embarrassing crush on Chris, the band's lead singer and Jake's erstwhile best friend. But that was before enigmatic wanderer Parker McAvoy signed on as the band's new lead guitarist. He can only deny his attraction to sweet, dorky Parker for so long before the urge to do something about it becomes impossible to ignore. The trouble is, Parker knows all about Jake's philandering ways—and oh, yeah, he's not gay. Or so Jake thinks until a string of related events provides encouraging new insight. Can he convince Parker to overlook his colorful past and give him a chance? Or will this love song fade out before it even begins?

Jeanne - American Love Songs is one of the best books I have read all year. Not just the best gay romance or best romance novel, but one of the best books, period.

Ashlyn Kane has elevated this story beyond genre and sexual orientation, to a place that few works of fiction ever reach: American Love Songs is a great story about friendship, love, and the precarious nature of success in the music industry. Sure, there is the added wrinkle of how being a young gay man effects all of this, but it’s not treated like a burden, which is so often done in gay romances.

Jake Brenner is gay. His friends, family, and fans of the band all know this for fact. We as readers learn it right off the bat. Jake never bemoans his sexuality. In fact, his causal self acceptance allows the reader to quickly move past that fact to get to know Jake as a person. To know Jake is to love him.

It’s been a long time since I fell this wholly in love with a fictional character, much less a gay one, but it’s hard not to be smitten with someone so funny, creative, and loyal.

Wayward Sons’ Inaugural Post

Wow, okay, this page has eight fans now and only four of them are us, so I guess I should put something up to introduce ourselves or something. Anyway, here’s a picture.

On the left is Jimmy, our drummer. You can just see him under all the hair. Jimmy’s a great guy. Dumber than a sack of hammers, but damn, he can count.

Next up is Chris, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist. Chris can hit the high notes like a Viennese choirboy. Also, don’t let his pretty face fool you. He’s a douchebag.

The slammin’ redhead rocking the pixie cut and licking the guitar is Kylie, lead guitarist. Yes, those are her real boobs. No, you can’t touch them. Sorry, guys. Jimmy will break you, and we’re too poor to get lawyers.

Oh, hey, and the hot guy on his knees is me, Jake. Please, no blowjob jokes. People should never joke about blowjobs. I play bass. Nice to meet you.

Together, we’re the Wayward Sons, an up-and-coming (is that pretentious? To call oneself up-and-coming? Who am I kidding; nobody’s reading this, so who cares?) rock band based in Independence, Kansas.

America Long Songs by Ashlyn Kane page 5

That is Jake. A smartass, shit talker who will have you rolling and snorting through the entire book. His character voice is crystal clear, and unmistakably his own. The same can be said about the rest of the motley crew that makes up the cast of this story. Everyone from minor players like Jake’s loving mother to Jake’s love interest, Parker, come alive on the page.

Speaking of Parker...*swoons* Yeah, Parker McAvoy is the quintessential tortured genius. At the start of the story we are unsure of what tortures him, though it is clear that something not-so-good has happened in his past. What’s most fascinating about Parker, other than his incredible musical talent, is how his quiet, shy personality is the perfect counter to Jake’s loud, outgoing nature. Don’t get me wrong, Parker is no shrinking violet. He holds his own even with the likes of Mr. Brenner.

Jake plonked the bottle down in the middle of the living room table, distracting Parker from his place in Breakfast of Champions. Rubbing his eyes with one hand—he’d been at it for hours—Parker lowered his glasses with the other. His eyebrows lifted as his gaze lighted on the bottle of amber liquid.

“We’re going to play a game,” Jake said firmly, but he made sure to smile just in case Parker thought he was a psychopath.14

“Is it the one you play on your knees in front of a toilet?” Parker asked. “Because I hate that game.”

With a flourish, Jake produced two shot glasses from behind his
back.

“Oh,” Parker sighed. “It is that game.” But he folded the corner of his page over and set the book aside, so he obviously didn’t hate it that much.

America Long Songs by Ashlyn Kane page 24

Side note: That “14” in the quote above isn’t a typo. It’s a marker for an annotation (see below). They are scattered through the narrative and are comments from either Jake or Parker. I have never seen anything like this before in fiction, but it is great, and never failed to make me laugh.

14In case you were wondering? It didn’t help.—PM

These two are so perfectly in-tune that you can feel the magnetic pull between them through the pages of the book. They have palpable chemistry and an adorable interplay, not to mention undeniable sexual tension, even when they are just friends. Although, when things become more complicated between them it is some of the hottest erotica I have ever read (I’ll let the other pervs tell you all about that). However, the romance of this story isn’t just Jake and Parker’s journey, but the slow and steady seduction of the reader by the world that Ashlyn Kane has created.

This isn’t just a love story, it’s a Rock story, and it is jam packed with classic rock-n-roll moments. From Parker getting intense stage fright at their first big show, to the band going through endless interviews to find an acceptable road manager who wouldn’t sleep with Chris, the lead singer, and even the filming of their first music video. All these details help to flesh out the world of American Love Songs and transforms it from genre fiction to a full-developed, and wholly enjoyable fiction novel (that has a gay romance at its center).

I am passionate about this book, not just because I love the characters, story, and the eyeball-meltingly hot sex scenes, but because I believe Ashlyn Kane has done something that I knew could be done if someone talented and brave enough would just do it. She has shown us that there is a place for gay fiction to sit side by side with mainstream fiction. That stories featuring homosexual relationships at the forefront can be just as enthralling and fulfilling as their heterosexual counterparts, in this case even more so. This book blows just about every romantic story (heterosexual or homosexual) that I’ve read this year out of the fucking water. No, I am not exaggerating.

American Love Songs is a hilarious, heartwarming, and romantic story of two friends finding love in the chaotic world of rock-n-roll. I hope that we have convinced you to take a chance, skip a trip to Starbucks for one day and buy this book. If you love slash fan fiction, if you love rock-n-roll or even if you just love well written fiction, this is the book for you.

Jess - When Jen and Jeanne first started talking about this book - yes, a real book - I sort of chalked it up to nice to know but not really my cup of tea. But the more they went on and on about how amazing it was, the more intrigued I became. And so began my foray into erotic M/M original fiction and continued my love affair with slashfic.

Jeanne gave you the entire back story and set this whole review up nicely. I think what I’d like to focus on is the actual way Ashlyn Kane tells this story. It’s no surprise by the title of the book, that American Love Songs is about music, but it’s the way the book is constructed - Prelude, Movements, Interludes, and Postlude, that set this book up for such success. This, coupled with all the blog posts and fun footnotes, really helped move and break the story up, so that it could be told in the most efficient and moving way. The whole time I was reading, I felt like I was an insider in Parker and Jake’s world. This creative element seriously set the tone for the whole story, and it worked like a charm.

As Jeanne said, we know from the beginning that Jake is gay. It’s so upfront and out there, that it’s a non-issue. At some points, I even forgot about it, because it just wasn’t that big of a deal... until Parker comes along. Parker, to me, was the character with whom I identified most. I grew up much like he did - conservative religious home with very clear views on homosexuality - and as I watched him come to grips with who he was and to terms with all the struggles he’d face along the way (I won’t spoil them here for you), I felt myself fall more and more in love with his character. I really felt like Ashlyn Kane handled the religious component well, blending it into the fabric of the story and using it as a way to bring Parker and Jake closer. There’s a truly touching scene on Christmas Eve where Jake, knowing Parker is struggling to reconcile his religious background with what he knows to be true about himself, finds a gay-friendly church and they share in a tradition Parker desperately needed.

“This place is, you know.” Parker gestured helplessly, trying to convey what he meant.

“One hundred percent homo friendly,” Jake assured him. “Come on, I wouldn’t do that to you.”

“No, I know.” His posture relaxed, and he leaned back into the uncomfortable wood. “I know you wouldn’t. I guess I’m just expecting fire and brimstone, you know?”

“Well, sorry to disappoint, but I’m pretty sure the only open flame tonight is going to be on the advent candles.”

America Long Songs by Ashlyn Kane pages 217 & 218

This scene was a turning point in their relationship, and it led to some seriously delicious sexy times.

Speaking of... I cannot even begin to tell you how intense the UST (and you know I LOVE this) was in this novel. Sometimes it was just a glance, other times it was a lingering kiss, or even the sound of Parker’s voice that left me feeling all hot and bothered. Then again, it could have been the more intense moments like when Parker is in a photo shoot and Jake is totally checking him out:
He noticed the way the jeans Macy put him in clung to Parker’s thighs and the way Parker’s hair, grown out of its usual buzzcut through negligence, had been styled to look like someone had been running their fingers through it. He noticed the way the dramatic shadows from the overhead lights turned Parker’s eyelashes into enormous seductive crescents. He noticed the obscene way Parker’s hips cradled the body of his guitar.

God, did he notice.

It was becoming something of a problem.

America Long Songs by Ashlyn Kane page 145

What followed was probably one of the hottest make-out scenes I’ve ever read. It went something like this: Jake follows Parker back to his dress room. Jake slams Parker against the door, complete with hands in hair, knees between legs, and hot steamy kisses. As questions arise in Jake’s mind, he looks to Parker for reassurance, but all he gets is this babbling mess of words:
“Jake -- Jake, that’s” he stopped to let out a truly filthy moan, and the pitch of his voice went up an octave. “Jake, if you don’t stop I’m gonna--”

It wasn’t a cue to stop, and Jake didn’t take it as one. He put a hand over Parker’s mouth and bit his pulse point again as Parker fucking shook apart, mewling and shuddering and coming in his pants so hard Jake could feel the pulses against his leg, and holy Christ, Jake wanted him.

America Long Songs by Ashlyn Kane page 149

That’s just a little, albeit super hot, taste of what was to come later. Everything that follows is an added bonus in this already amazing story. As I read, I never felt like sex was the main point - an issue that doesn’t go undiscussed and serves as just another major element in their already tumultuous and unsteady relationship.

There is nothing I didn’t truly love about this story. Every character in this book is meaningful and adds to the very articulate telling of this story. Give American Love Songs a try; it will be one of the best books you read this year.

Jen - When I finished reading American Love Songs I just could not wipe the smile off of my face. I had this amazing feeling of contentment and satisfaction, as well as awe. It wasn’t just that I was pleased with the outcome of the story. It was almost like I was basking in the glow of a job well done, only I hadn’t done the job, Ashlyn Kane did.

I’ve been reading m/m romances for a couple of months (slash fanfic is a gateway drug, apparently) and there have been many stories that I’ve enjoyed. American Love Songs is just on a level all to itself: the characters and the plot are so well developed it just blows the rest of the genre right out of the water. The plot is not just a means of moving from one sex scene to another as I’ve seen in other m/m novels. Don’t get me wrong--this story is sexy as hell, but the sex scenes advance the plot and are in no way gratuitous.

I can’t think that there’s any way that a reader of this blog would not love this story. As Jeanne and Jess have said, the characters are wonderfully lovable. Jake is a self-assured rock star to-be, but he’s not an asshole. He’s observant, yet he misses some big signals. Parker’s got the aloof, cool, uber-talented musician thing going on, while at the same time he’s very naive and innocent. The story of the band’s rise to fame holds the reader’s interest just as much as the love story does. You’ll root for Wayward Sons to succeed just as hard as you’ll root for Jake and Parker to finally, finally realize that they both want the same thing.

It takes the boys a while to realize what they’re feeling for the other, and it takes some more time before they’re able to talk about it. Parker misunderstands some of Jake’s actions and words. Jake is so caught up in feelings that he’s sure will be unrequited that he doesn’t take some of Parker’s actions at face value, and he completely fails to recognize the truth that is screaming out from lyrics Parker has written. It’s a delicious journey- a little angst, a lot of UST, and some seriously UNFy loving.

I absolutely loved reading about these boys. When I reached the end, I was not left with that unsatisfied feeling you get at the end of some fics or books--the feeling of absolutely needing more about the characters for the story to feel complete. It’s absolutely just right. American Love Songs is a book I’ll read again and again, and I am definitely looking forward to reading more from Ashlyn Kane.
