Fandom Hopping - MerlinL The Student Prince

Photobucket

Some may say we’re easily distracted.

We say, “Why limit ourselves to just one fandom full of smut when there are soooo many other possibilities out there?!?!” And so we give you Fandom Hopping, a place to poke your nose into another universe, meet some new characters, and enjoy all the pervy possibilities when a writer fucks with the canon someone else created.

by: FayJay

A Modern day Merlin AU set at the University of St Andrews, featuring teetotal kickboxers, secret wizards, magnificent bodyguards of various genders, irate fairies, imprisoned dragons, crumbling gothic architecture, arrogant princes, adorable engineering students, stolen gold, magical doorways, attempted assassination, drunken students, shaving foam fights, embarrassing mornings after, The Hammer Dance, duty, responsibility, friendship and true love..

This story was inspired by the thought of Prince William of Wales (and indeed the current Max von Hapsburg) studying at the University of St Andrews; it is also, as the title suggests, at least a little inspired by the operetta 'The Student Prince'.

MissDare
I don’t remember, unfortunately, who originally recommended me The Student Prince by FayJay, because if I knew I would surely snog that person madly in thanks! (It might have been Fr333bird ;)

First of all, I refuse to call The Student Prince a fic. For me it’s a full-blown novel. It’s so well planned, and the whole world, as well as the main and secondary characters, are well greatly developed that it stands out from all the other fics I’ve read. It is as much a fanfiction as the BBC Merlin series itself – it’s rather an interpretation of Arthurian legends.

The beginning of The Student Prince is a real treat for all Harry Potter fans. We get to know Merlin – a young ‘secret’ wizard travelling to school (University of St Andrews) in a train where he meets a slightly Hermione-like Gwen – soon to be his best friend. Merlin even mentions that he feels like Harry Potter and then both he and Gwen discuss whether Harry and Draco were gay and secretly ‘doing it’. FayJay is winking at her readers here and giving us a hint that we may expect some amusing references to popular culture, myths, real life events and people (like Lady Gaga Viva), as well as works of fiction, fanfiction included.

The humor in this story is incredible! I totally agree with Chele who says this fic has some of the best banters that’s out there. I believe it is connected to the fact that not only the main pair (whose conversations are hilarious), but also the secondary characters are perfectly portrayed by FayJay – especially the totally brilliant Morgana, who in my head should be played by a young Helena Bonham Carter.

Of course the main characters are just as perfect and reflect those from the show. Merlin is sensitive, intelligent, courageous, self-sacrificing and heartbreaking in his secret pining over his prince. Arthur is a prat, but a sweet, honorable and good-hearted one – a real future king to die for. Together they make an amazing pair, even though all odds are against them.

I adore everything about this story – the beautiful and intelligent use of powerful magic, the adventurous part of conspiracies, sabotages, and assassins, the incredibly postmodern Dragon who glues the whole magical world together, listens to an iPod, pilots a hijacked plane and craves a Twitter account (seriously - this is the best dragon ever!), the amazingly described University and fraternity customs which make you feel like you participate in Merlin’s student’s life, and finally – the touching love story.

The gentle slash in this story is deeply moving and gorgeous. We witness the evolution of true love, of course underlined with almost touchable desire (after all we are talking about very young and horny guys here!), but with a deep meaning and the heavy weight of fate (because The Student Prince is in fact a reincarnation fic). Although hot sex is present here I believe this is a story which can be read even by people who’ve never read slash, and who wouldn’t even consider reading it before. Love is love in this story and this is it.

PhotobucketAnd we are talking about a love which is not an easy one. Arthur, as the Prince of Wales is the heir to the throne and even the thought of him being gay is a blasphemy. Merlin knows there is no way his dreams can come true, but it doesn’t mean he stops hoping. It is heartbreaking to follow Merlin who tries so hard to spare himself the heartache and fails at each step. FayJay depicts this in little bits – sometimes just in single words scattered here and there which make the reader’s guts clench. A perfect example is the end of the shaving-foam fight between Merlin and Arthur:

[Arthur] let go of Merlin's wrists and pushed himself away as if Merlin had suddenly become contagious, and Merlin felt all the sunlight vanish from the day with that jerky, horrified rejection. He just lay there in the grass for a couple of minutes, staring up at the sky after Arthur had skidded away from him, and asked himself just what the hell he thought he was playing at.

And then Percy, in full Lando Calrissian regalia, tripped over him, and uttered a war cry as he got to his knees, and Merlin was scrambling to his feet, sticky and wigless and just a little bit broken, but hiding it well, and clutching at a can of shaving foam like it was a life line, and the battle was on.

So… if you haven’t started reading The Student Prince just yet – you need to do it right away!
It really doesn’t matter which fandom you usually like, if you read het, or slash, or poly, or only some specific kinks – this story is everything a modern fantasy fan can ask for. It’s perfectly written – in a language that screams ‘talent and skill!’ all over the pages. The plot is captivating and makes the reader anxiously step from one foot to another, begging “Please, let it be okay!”. I have to admit I was so nervous while reading this story I had to take a glance at the last pages to see what there was waiting for me in the end…

And if you add to all this a mythical kraken who comes to Merlin in the midst of his sorrow to cheer Merlin up with underwater travel and song-singing; a fairy-tale of curse-breaking true-love’s kiss and a memory-wiping spell which will make you snot-sob, then you’ll find yourself desperately trying to bend time in order to just read it, and then read some more – at work, at traffic lights, in an elevator, in a toilet… You won’t be able to break from it until you’ve finished. And then you’ll want to read it again.

Chele

The Student Prince is the story that convinced me I could be in love with the Merlin fandom despite never having seen the show. Armed with only the basic knowledge of Arthurian legend I plunged deep into this fiic. and quickly slipped down the rabbit hole of awesome that is this story.

This fic has some of the best banter I’ve ever read. I found myself legitimately laughing out loud while reading at times, and with a huge grin on my face for the vast majority of the duration. Merlin has a wicked, dry wit. Arthur is sweet and disarming, with his genuineness, but he’s also fast on the draw with a comback.

I love that Merlin’s crush on Arthur doesn’t stop him from being able to talk to him like a regular guy, which means that he fucks with him incessantly. The transition from fanboy to friend is smooth, and you can feel the pull in your navel as Merlin’s crush turns to genuine affection and finally, deep love.

PhotobucketThere is something for everyone in this fic, sexy college students, constant hilarity, intense UST, and beautiful sweet love. If you’ve been waiting for the right fic to seduce you into the Merlin fandom, this is the one.

Emmy
I think the best thing about us reccing the The Student Prince, is that it gave me the desperate excuse to read it again!!! And it was only when I reread it that I realised how much I had missed it! I have our lovely guest reccer, MssDare to thank for reccing this story to me, when I was still pretty wet behind my ears in the Merlin fandom (although I still consider myself a newbie, I have now easily read a thousand fics of Merthur/Brolin!).

When I was telling Chele about how she had to read a fic of awesome aka The Student Prince and she said we had to Fandom Hop(ping) it, I was a little hesitant. Why? Not because of the quality of the fic, or HOW MUCH I ADORE IT! But because I thought that everyone had read it by now... But then the lovely Chele reminded me that the point of this feature is to introduce our lovely, pervy, smut loving chaps and chappettes into new realms, worlds, character and SMUT! And then Posy let me know that not everyone in love with Merthur fic had read, so we were doubly good to go!

So here you go loves. One of my all time favourite fics ever, in ANY FANDOM. Hopefully we can convince you with this post as to why you should read it. As the lovely MssDare said above, no matter what kind of fic you normally read, or whatever pairing of fic you normally read, you SHOULD read this fic!

Now I have had to reign myself in in this review, or you would have pages of me waxing lyrical about it and FayJay ‘s writing! As it really does have it all! It has the best use of Britishisms AND its use of its location in the East of Scotland. I am picky about both. And it uses humour brilliantly alongside this. For example GOLD BLEND! Gold fucking Blend for Uther?!! Genius! If anyone doesn’t know what I mean here, as it is a British thing. Just ping me on twitter or ask here in the comments! GENIUS though! This fic is genuinely funny. And the Dragon?
He gave the dragon a plaintive look, and it bridled. “Are you asking me to disregard my sacred trust and allow you to enter the private room of another wizard uninvited?” it asked. “A full wizard? So that you can persuade her to assist you in committing a crime against your anointed king?”
“Er…” said Merlin. It sounded a bit dodgy, when you put it like that. “Yes?”
“I should be delighted to oblige you, my dear boy,” said the dragon, settling back down onto its haunches and smiling broadly.
The DRAGON is fabby, so funny and such a clever use of the character and just another example of how FULL of humour The Student Prince is about being gay, being magic or being royal.

“I'm asking if you like cock. If you're a homosexual. Do you like to fuck other men, Merlin, in a deeply gay sort of way?"
And especially LOTS of humour about poor Merthur and his pinings for ‘His Royal Hotness’
“I wouldn’t want to fuck you if you had a ten inch knob made of solid gold and your arsehole was the gate to Nirvana, you massive pillock,” said Merlin, red faced and furious. “I can’t be friends with you because you’re a gibbering twatwaffle, not because I would ever, in a million years, want to shag you. Get over yourself!”
and how Arthur pushes his heritage and title in new ways with Merlin as Merlin makes him feel free somehow.

The chemistry between Merlin and Arthur is just magnificent, from humorous, bromantic, friendly, meaningful, considerate, to intense and sexual. Arthur relies on Merlin, without knowing just how much Merlin does for him, but he know he needs him in his life(HOW CANON?!):
“It is a bit of a stupid adventure,” Arthur admitted, his breath brushing warm against the nape of Merlin’s neck. “But it’s nice getting away for once. From everyone.”
“You didn’t get away from everyone,” Merlin said, shaking with laughter. ”You brought me along! I’m part of ‘everyone’, you great numpty!”
“No,” said Arthur, quietly, and his arm tightened around Merlin’s waist. ”No, you’re not.”
Arthur maintains his pratness, and his straight status, but yet Merlin cannot be imagining all that tension and undercurrents between them, can he? Can HE?
“Say uncle?” he said, pressing his advantage, and then there was a rather startling bendy flippy thing like something out of The Matrix (well, okay, like something out of a very low budget and quite tipsy version of The Matrix), and then suddenly Merlin was flat on his back with Arthur sitting on top of him, legs tangled together awkwardly and both of Merlin’s wrists pinned to the floor.
“Oh,” he said, blinking up at Arthur in astonishment. His chest was heaving from laughter and more than laughter, and Arthur had to be noticing the unfortunate warm bulge in Merlin’s jeans, since he was basically sitting on it.
“You say uncle!” said Arthur, smugly, his face very close to Merlin’s. His breath smelled like Jack Daniels and Coke, and Merlin was acutely aware that it would only take a little movement to brush his lips against Arthur’s mouth. Just a very little movement.
GAH! So adorable and at times through this fic you will be willing these boys to get it together. Poor Merlin has a tough time through it, throwing himself into dangerous situations willy-nilly to protect his prince whilst falling for him hard and trying to not let it bother him when he wants more than a friendship with the prince and gets all sorts of mixed signals.... There is one scene in partic I won’t spoil. But you WILL be shouting at Merlin, ‘WHY DID YOU DO THAT!??!!’ As he always puts Arthur first... It is his destiny after all......
Merlin knew it was probably pretty emo to go for a long, lonely walk down the West Sands on a cold November afternoon just because he knew that Arthur always went there for his morning run, but he did not care. If he wanted to be emo, he was bloody well going to be emo and nobody was going to stop him. There were plenty of black-clad teenagers with black-dyed hair and chipped black nail polish out there in the world who were listening to gloomy music and writing bad poetry with far less justification for being miserable than Merlin currently had.
Photobucket
This still is one of my favouritist of favouritist fics I have ever read. It has EVERYTHING you could want. A perfect portrayal of British, in fact Scottish (even harder!) Student life. THE BEST use of supporting cast ever! Mordred, Morgana, Kay et al are all used perfectly. And the connection and chemistry between Arthur and Merlin is perfection. So so so so good. The actual storyline is fabulous, engaging and gripping. Both with magic and with heartfail and love. The desire and lust and tension are unffff - especially as poor Merlin has to endure the perfect peachy arse of his Prince.... It has it all Please please please if you have never read Merlin before, read this fic. You will NOT regret it.. And you can come flail with us, as we will understand.

Jen
If you are looking for a charming, funny with a side of angst, modern AU Merlin to read, you have come to the right place. The Student Prince by FayJay is all of these things, and more.

Like so many other stories we rec, you’re going to want to clear your schedule for this one. It’s complete, and I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if you can resist reading it in one go. Get a friend to read it too, so you can flail together. I’m very glad I had Emmy and Chele to listen to my swooning as I read.

As the other Pervs have said, there are so many layers of awesome in this story. FayJay cleverly weaves Arthurian legend into a modern setting. There are also subtle nods toward current events, and she will make you laugh throughout. Arthur and Merlin’s banter is fabulously sarcastic and cutting, but it is also heavy with UST.

Merlin is delightful and awkward as he starts to learn more about his magic, and as he tries to resist the feelings he increasingly has toward Arthur. Arthur is away from his father, and is figuring out who exactly he is in the world. I absolutely adore Gwen here--she’s a sweet, lovely university student, and a very dear friend for Merlin.

I’ll leave you with a bit of one of my favorite parts of the story, a pub crawl for charity.
"Say uncle?" he said, pressing his advantage, and then there was a rather startling bendy flippy thing like something out of The Matrix (well, okay, like something out of a very low budget and quite tipsy version of The Matrix), and then suddenly Merlin was flat on his back with Arthur sitting on top of him, legs tangled together awkwardly and both of Merlin's wrists pinned to the floor.

"Oh," he said, blinking up at Arthur in astonishment. His chest was heaving from laughter and more than laughter, and Arthur had to be noticing the unfortunate warm bulge in Merlin's jeans, since he was basically sitting on it.

"You say uncle!" said Arthur, smugly, his face very close to Merlin's. His breath smelled like Jack Daniels and Coke, and Merlin was acutely aware that it would only take a little movement to brush his lips against Arthur's mouth. Just a very little movement.

He met Arthur's eyes, and saw that same realisation there, and there was a shocky little instant where the whole world seemed to freeze – although not in the silent, bugs-in-amber way that Merlin had experienced on The Pier, thank God – and Merlin knew that he could change everything if he just leaned up an inch or two. Arthur's eyes widened.

Posy

I totally agree with the Pervs above. This is an amazing story that weaves so many threads together from history, the modern day, pop culture, and the TV show Merlin. I also felt a bit of Colin Morgan in mixed in with Merlin’s character. He’s so lovely and sweet and a bit shy and reserved, but then he brings out his wicked wit, much like the actor does in his interviews.

What got me more than anything was how palpable their attraction was. During a party where jello shots are being slurped off bellies by blindfolded people, FayJay uses such simple, yet beautiful imagery to suck you in to feel what Merlin feels, and Arthur, in turn.

And then Arthur's gaze drifted over to look at Merlin, sprawling shirtless on the floor, and stayed there. And stayed there. And stayed there. Arthur kept on looking at Merlin while Izzy explained the rules of the game, and while Morgana started it by ringing a little bell, and while Blanche's tongue slid blindly over Merlin's belly, and while she chased the shots of jelly over his skin, and while he gasped and squirmed, and while she squashed one jelly shot into pulp and had to eat it off him open-mouthed, her tongue swirling wetly into his belly button and chasing glistening blobs of strawberry goo over his hipbone. All through the longest three minutes of Merlin's life, Arthur never looked anywhere but at Merlin, his eyes sliding hotly from Merlin's hips to his belly to his chest and up to his face, where his cheeks were growing redder than the strawberry jelly, and he was biting his bottom lip helplessly and trying not to moan.

PhotobucketThat simply makes me squirm. Gah! I love this story so much that I need to re-read it. I’m so thankful to Archive Of Our Own for the easy download option because this story will be on my nook forever.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you're a busy perv and don't have much time to read, why not LISTEN to The Student Prince. There is a audio version of the fic as read by the author here.

Fandom Hopping - Harry Potter - Finding Himself 04/10/2012

Summary: The-Boy-Who-Almost-Died has to figure out what it means that he didn't. Harry's tumultuous 5th year at Hogwarts is Cedric's 7th and final. Bound together by shared trauma, both boys fall under Ministry suspicion ... Who is Cedric Diggory? Cedric!Lives AU

Chele
Let’s just take a moment before we begin to rejoice that there is fanfiction, because that means that there is a Potterverse wherein Cedric doesn’t fucking die. YES!
Not only does he live, but Minisinoo gives us a hero in Cedric. One who is is fully fleshed out, mature, and fuckhot sexy.

Finding Himself picks up at the end of The Goblet of Fire, and takes us through a remarkably canon-faithful version of The Order of the Phoenix, with the monumental twist of being able to see it all through the eyes of a very living Cedric Diggory, who was badly injured, but not killed in the graveyard following the Triwizard Tournament.

With the miracles of cleansing charms and dittany, Harry Potter fic readers may have begun to feel that magic could fix anything except an Avada Kedavra, but this early exposition alleviates us of this illusion fast. It is brilliant the way we are able to view the Potterverse through the eyes of someone experiencing a physical impairment which not even magic can repair. This world is dangerous, difficult and palpably on the brink of war. It is an Order of the Phoenix for grown ups.

Cedric’s narrative is that of a remarkably mature young man who, after a life of self-reliance and easy popularity, learns to accept help and support from others, while fully realising his true ability to aide those around him as well. I love this Cedric. His vulnerability, his strength, his humor. He’s so very real, and unlike canon Harry, who is still so very young, Cedric is a grown up, so I can perv on him freely.

There are a hundred tiny bits of perfection in this story’s characterizations. Hufflepuff house is a character of itself in this story. Its members show the true tenacity of their represent animal, the badger by being the only group to truly make a real, effective stand against Umbridge, whose reign of terror over Hogwarts has left no student unscathed. I love the way they dig in, stand together, and represent true unity.

Hermione is also brilliantly written, and I completely believed their relationship and compatibility. In Cedric she finds her intellectual match, and an unexpected mate for her soul. Their slow-building desire and attraction felt startlingly authentic. The time it takes to build that physical attraction, and a comfort level with one another to explore it, only causes an increase in intensity when they begin expressing that attraction fully. I was quite pleased to see the potential of the prefect’s batch fully realized. Unf.

While there is a love story here, it is as much a triumph of the soul as it is a triumph of the heart. It is Hermione’s goodness and friendship that gives their relationship a breath of possibility, but it is Cedric’s strength that sets it firmly up a foundation, and lights your pants on fire.

Through a thousand little moments and so many beautiful words, Cedric Diggory becomes a man to admire, falls in love with Hermione, and finds himself.

Jess

To be honest, I almost don’t know what to say about this story. This was the first Harry Potter fanfiction I have read, and I can honestly say it completely blew me away. As I was reading it (yes, it’s ::cough:: long ::cough::) I was struck time and again at how well Minisinoo fleshed out this story, particularly Cedric and Hermione, in ways that were so consistent with canon. If you get to the end (and even a little throughout), you’ll find a really great author’s endnote that provides the reader with all the reasons why this story was written, how Minisinoo came to the conclusions she did, and more importantly, why this pairing - Cedric and Hermione - feels so logical and perfect.

This story, at the heart, is about growing up, living in a world where not everything makes sense, where you must face the consequences of your choices, and how love and friendship can mean the difference between being on the inside or isolated and alone. Cedric, as we learn relatively soon, is critically wounded and ends up crippled after trying to save Harry during the final challenge in the Twiwizard Tournament. Over the course of the story, we watch Cedric bravely face the enormity of his handicap. By all measure, he is strong and courageous, but it’s heart wrenching moments like the one below when I was reminded how vulnerable and young he really is.

”It feels like it’s never going to stop - found out what I can’t do, I mean. I know the nerve damage isn’t going away. But the rest - I peel myself like an onion, but I’m afraid when I get to the middle, there won’t be anything there.” His throat closed on the last word, choking him, and he looked away to hide the sudden sting in his eyes.

It’s through countless moments like this that Cedric realizes he actually has friends and people in his life who he can count on to help him face the challenges - Can anyone say Umbrage? - that will literally push him to the limit - physically, emotionally, and mentally.

That’s also where we see Hermione shine. Younger but still an equal in many ways, I found myself loving her. Yes, she’s bossy. Yes, she’s a know it all. Yes, she can be overbearing. But we also know she’s fiercely loyal, a good friend, and someone who can and does love freely. I found the nature of their relationship incredibly believable and mature. After all, we are talking about Cedric and Hermione. There are SO many examples I could give to show the blossoming nature of their relationships (I have 19 pages of notes highlighted on my Kindle), but I think this is a good one.

Looking up at him she caught his grin. “You’re teasing me.”

“You fall for it so easily, you make it hard not to.”

Reaching out, he ran a thumb over her cheek and she closed her eyes, her expression almost transported. Inside his chest, something uncurled, fluttering like moth wings. “You’re so beautiful,” he said even more softly. Her eyes opened, surprised. “And truth? When you came to the tent last year [during the Triwizard Tournament], looking so focused and worried for Harry, I was jealous. I wanted a friend as loyal as you; I never expected to get you myself.”

And can we all just swoon together for a second. This entire story is full of tender moments like that and others shared in the library, out by the lake, and in the Great Hall. But let’s be honest, they aren’t ALL like that. They quarrel and snip at each other, ignore each other, and then make up, and as time goes on those make up sessions and the pressing of boundaries - physical and emotional - grow more and more intense. I could go on and on about the build up, the first touches, first kisses - “Cedric kissed like it was a conversation - give and take, exploratory, sensual, even a bit sloppy because he wasn’t thinking of how it looked, only how it felt... Cedric kissed like somebody who wanted to be kissed back.” - first times for lots of things, but I think I’ll let Cedric’s poetry do the talking.

Skin-thrill in touch. Heart-catch and breath held. Watch her lips as she drops words, eat them and her mouth both. There lies all of her for me to taste. She hides in my heart, peeks out and surprises me. I dream of futures in kaleidoscope senses. Soft conversations and the smell of rain, warm hearth-fire nights and summer sun caught in leaves and brown hair. Laughter and whispers and soft sighs from her hands on me. Want lies heavy between my legs. Love lies somewhere else. The intangible Real. My body knows only a wall-shadow of the truth, but in the shadow is the Form of Beauty.
And folks, there is plenty more poetry where that came from. There’s plenty of sneaky time spent in the prefects’ bathroom and in the room of requirement. You’re just going to have to read it to see...

There are literally about a million things I could say about this story, but I know my words simply won’t do the plot, characterizations, the extrapolations and parallel canon storytelling justice. Go read this story. Just like the original series, this story and the possibilities will draw you in and hold you tight in its clutches until you’re at the very last page. Good news for me (and you)... there’s a sequel - DULCE ET DECORUM EST that follows Cedric and Hermione through books 6 and 7.

As you read this little (ok, big! thick! long!) gem, make sure you leave Minisinoo some love, and tell her the Pervs sent you.

Jen
Chele shared the link to Finding Himself at exactly the right time. I’d just watched Goblet of Fire, and was positively swooning over Robert’s sweet baby face. I was fully primed to appreciate a deeper exploration into Cedric.

If you weren’t captivated by Cedric in the book or the movie, Minisinoo’s Cedric is sure to capture your heart and your pants. To be honest, this fic is so good that her Cedric is really JKR’s, and this book could absolutely have been the book after GoF.

Hermione is, well, Hermione. Incredibly bright *cough* know-it-all, bossy, ever the good girl. Hermione’d never really had reason to talk to Cedric, until Cedric was so horribly cursed at the end of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. She’s drawn to Cedric, taking time to visit him at St.Mungo’s when she’s taking a few days to spend time with her parents. After they share a moment in the elevator, she realizes she is liable to fall oh-so-hard for charming, intelligent, gorgeous Cedric. This scene is so innocent, yet ridiculously hot.

In the lift, he turned in the chair to look up at her - and caught her staring. For just a moment, there was a connection there, like electricity, sparking hot between them and making her weak in the back of her knees. The pupils of his gray eyes had dilated, and that was not just a friendly look. Hermione couldn't breathe, felt herself falling, pulled like gravity. And if gravity wasn't a Wizarding concept, it still functioned in the Wizarding world. It was functioning now, sucking her in - sucking them in. This wasn't supposed to happen. She wasn't supposed to want another girl's boy.

Ah, yes. There’s that--Cho. Cedric feels the pull that Hermione feels. He realizes he’s not really compatible with Cho, but doesn’t want to hurt her. Hermione and Cedric continue as friends when they get back to Hogwarts at the end of the summer, but they don’t acknowledge their mutual attraction. The UST, the banter, the pure rightness of Hermione & Cedric will have you swooning.

There’s so much story, suspense, and growing up in this story that you’ll never feel my gods won’t they get it on already! Everything develops naturally and just so right for these two. In a world where Voldemort has returned and Umbridge is running Hogwarts, of course things don’t always go smoothly for our couple. And again, it’s just so right.

So, go. Go get lost in Minisinoo’s fabulous alternate reality. Don’t fear the word count! Finding Himself reads very quickly, and besides, you won’t want be able to stop. Your family doesn’t really need you, do they?
Teal

Who wasn’t devastated when Cedric Diggory was murdered so abruptly and unexpectedly in Goblet of Fire? You’re a liar if you say you weren’t. Even before the movie when Rob became him, Cedric was a charming, popular, likable character. He was Harry’s foe of sorts in Quidditch and later the Twi-Wizard Tournament and for Cho Chang’s affection, but he was impossible to hate. It was a such a clever, well placed characterization by Rowling, so when Cedric and Harry finally showed their solidarity for Hogwarts, not their personal glory, it was an utter shock to see their display of unity turn into disaster. Like many of the deaths in the Harry Potter series, it was one that had most of us turning back the page to reread in disbelief and make sure we’d gotten that right. Not only was it significant for Harry’s perspective on his role in taking down the Dark Lord, but also the first truly significant death in the impending war against Voldemort. The death not only of one of the “good guys” but also one of a student...an innocent. And a very popular, much loved one at that.

Enough history, though. You remember, I’m sure. Your heart broke with mine, and you probably wished there was some way you could go back and change it, thus why we turn to fanfiction. As author Minisinoo calls it, this is Cedric!Lives fic, and it’s certainly not the first. It may very well be the best, IMHO.

This fic is Order of the Phoenix through Cedric and Hermione’s eyes. It is both a rewrite of that book if Cedric has lived, playing a part in the dynamic of the school, being grouped with Harry and Dumbledore in Daily Prophet criticism, and in the Order of the Phoenix, and it is the journey of unexpected friendship, love, and discovery between Cedric and Hermione. It gives a depth to both characters that we simply didn’t see through Rowling’s original stories (or Harry’s eyes, for that matter) and also brings a number of other characters to life, including Cedric’s parents.

I simply cannot explain how well-rounded and evenly-paced this novel is, following the timeline of the original book while using Cedric in a great capacity. The action, struggles, and battles are all still there, though sometimes with different outcomes. Of course, what Perv Pack rec would be complete without mention of the smut? Don’t shy away because Hermione is a Fifth Year in this book. She is 16 and Cedric 18, and it truly is a love story.

Love, Cedric thought, was a sweet kind of drowning, and he never wanted to breathe.

His current state of bliss wasn't the result of sexual release - or not that entirely. He'd be lying if he said what they'd shared in the attic hadn't affected him.

No, his mood that Christmas Eve night rested on a sudden alchemy of everything - her laugh, the way the lamp above the dining table caught her brown hair, the blush in her cheeks, the softness of her hand, the way her brow furrowed when she was thinking, the lilt of her voice as she replied to something his father or mother asked her. It was how she could make him smile, make him think, then make him want her so badly he couldn't think at all. She engaged everything in him - body, mind, and soul.

Yes, teenage hormones do play their role, and this fic does cover the scope of an entire school year. These two set a pace of sexual exploration that is comfortable for both of them, not rushing, and they actually discuss it *gasp*! Teenagers who talk about their sexuality in a mature manner??? Hard to believe, but when you consider who we’re dealing with (and the characterizations the author expands), it really does make sense. It’s a coming of age story folded in with the adventure and struggles we all know, and that makes it sweet, sexy, and exciting to read.

He pulled away to look at her, his gray eyes dilated and dark. She just looked back until he let his hands slip down to the hem of her sweater. She raised her arms so he could pull it over her head, leaving her bare except for a white satin bra. He unhooked that too, and she let him slide the straps down her arms. But even if she'd wanted this, been the one to initiate it, she felt exposed and crossed her arms over her chest much as she had in the bath. This time, he gripped her wrists gently, moving her arms. "I want to see you," he muttered, voice cracking, his expression transported. "So lovely." His long fingers slipped up her arms and over her shoulders, then down the pale, freckled skin of her chest. He didn't touch the cold-puckered nipples, just cupped the curve of her shallow breasts. His skin was warm and she leaned into his touch, watching him look at her. To her surprise, she didn't feel embarrassed now. She felt beautiful, precious, and no longer desperate or daring. She inched closer until she could press her bare skin to his, arms sliding around him.

"I'm cold," she whispered. "Hold me."

So he did. Eventually, they made their way into her bed where they could pull up the covers and he kissed her all over beneath, tongue sliding fire across goose-pimpled skin. This time, instead of straddling him, she rubbed hands on the front of his trousers. She wanted to feel the hard length of him, even indistinct through two layers of cloth. Dropping back against the mattress, he raised his chin and moaned, bucking up into her palm. "Faster," he muttered, and she complied, watching his face as he approached orgasm. Afterwards, he rested a minute, then returned the favor, one hand between her legs, mouth at her nipple, tongue busy until she hissed and groaned and thrashed, feeling wanton and vulnerable. Appropriately - and amusingly - fireworks began somewhere outside at that moment, set off by impatient kids; they both laughed as he laid his head in the valley of her breasts, soft hair tickling her skin. She wasn't cold now, and after a while, he scooted up until they lay nose-to-nose, talking about nothing in particular, still half naked. His hands moved idly over her and hers over him.

Gah! And that’s just skimming the surface. Please, please, please go read this fic! Then share other Cedric/Hermione stories you love with me *puppy eyes*

Fandom Hopping - Transformers - Fracture Mechanics 03/28/2012

Summary: How mechs and factions break apart, and the choices that drive them to their absolute limits. Realities for each mech are redefined as worlds are torn asunder, and nothing is as it seems any longer. Where does the truth really lie for any mech?

After I finished reading Fracture Mechanics, I was, quite frankly, awestruck.

The narrative is emotional, intelligent, and powerful. It is cunningly written, with major surprises in more chapters than not. Once it grabs hold, it does not relent. The amount of thought put into each scene is obvious. What I enjoyed most about this story was the way it unfolded in the most unexpected
and complex of ways. Multiple times I was floored at what I was reading. Truly a gem in the world of fanfiction.

Chele
I LOVE THIS STORY LIKE WOAH.

Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way.

If you read only one fic in the Transformers fandom in your life, this is the one that it needs to be.
Fracture Mechanics portrays the story of two beings experiencing a soul-deep love in what are, perhaps, the worst circumstances imaginable.

Though not irredeemable, there will be points in this story where you hate both Soundwave and Jazz, though, surprisingly, it was more the latter than the former for me. They are wholly realized, rich characters who make mistakes, are faced with impossible choices, and as time goes on, make decisions based only on the hope to sate their need to be together in some way, forsaking nearly everything else in the process. It isn’t always pretty, but it will make you feel every emotion the way only a masterfully written story can.

It’s easy to gloss over the origins of Transformers, and if you’ve only watched the cartoon, or seen the Bayverse films, you’re just scratching the surface of this richly populated universe (but you’ve got enough background to dive in here, so don’t hesitate). In addition to being super cool robots that turn into super cool cars, they are sentient beings with millennia of history, culture, language and art. Unfortunately, the Cybertronians have been at war for nearly as long as Earth has held intelligent life. Those who are here on Earth are refugees, survivors of a self-inflicted apocalypse, living with only the basic means of survival, and no true permanent sanctuary or home. The principles which started this war are the same as any other: political oppression, socio-economic disparity between classes, and a charismatic military leader turned revolutionary, and their only hope to end it, lies in the same universal truths: hope, love, compromise.

The amazing thing that Asher119 does during the course of this story, is turn your perceptions of wrong and right in the face of conflict upside down. Even more than that, when put in the position of Jazz or Soundwave, the reader may even find themselves knowing that what is happening is wrong, but desperate to see it happen anyway because the moral taboo is overshadowed by the carnal desire, and emotional desperation.

A few weeks after reading this story, I found myself standing in the toy aisle with my 5 year old and he asked, ”Soundwave is a Decepticon. Decepticons are bad guys, right?” I then spent 15 minutes trying to explain that it’s okay for him to pick whichever toy he wanted, because Decepticons were only bad guys based on perspective, and that each Transformer should be looked at for who they are and their individual actions, and not judged based on their sigil.

Yeah. I’ve got it bad. This story gave it to me. Hard.

But the point is that this story is one of those rare pieces of fanfiction that can change the way you see the world based on the way it portrays characters that you think you already know about. It shows you a side of yourself, sometimes the ugly part, and gives you the chance to change your mind in this safe world of fiction.

The smut is also amazing. Those unfamiliar with Transformers fic may be initially o.O over the anatomical references of the mech form as it differs from the human one (spark, valve, transfluid, etc.) but trust me, within a chapter or two you won’t even notice. The passion conveyed by the intense emotional exchanges during the erotic content will captivate you with its intensity and surprise you when you find yourself squirming in your seat.

Read. This. Story. It is gorgeous, wickedly hot, and arguably important.

Once you’re done, come snuggle with me.

Hullo, mech lovers & other curious sorts =)

Be prepared in advance, this story is not fluff. It is a love story, full of twists and shocks, but in true Transformers fashion, it’s also an adventure...a mission.

Without giving away too much, a little background: Jazz, an Autobot, finds himself with Soundwave, a known and powerful Decepticon. The enemy. Jazz’s life is now on Earth, after the post-apocalyptic destruction of their home planet of Cybertron, so needless to say, he’s defensive and confused to find himself with this supposed lover. Soundwave is gentle and patient, carefully explaining to Jazz that they are in their home, on Cybertron, which was never destroyed. There was no war. There are no Decepticons. Confusion and doubt ensue as Jazz tries to reconcile the memories he has of his life with Soundwave to the vivid, detailed “fantasy” about the battle on Earth.

The question is, which world is real? The love he feels for Soundwave is genuine, and he believes them to be rekindling it as he accepts the reality of that life and let go of what his mind had apparently conjured up after a devastating injury. On the other hand, he has episodes where he can hear Prowl, one of his Autobot comrades, calling to him. He doesn’t really know who to believe, so he listens to his heart...falling deeper into Soundwave with each passing moment.

That’s as much as I will say because as you read this fic, you’ll be guessing just as much as Jazz. When the feelings are so strong and the lovemaking so intense, how can it not be real? And if it’s not, what is the purpose? How will things turn out? This story is quite different from other Transformers fics I’ve read, and I love the twists and turns of the plot, the originality, and the gut-wrenching reality of finding love and truth when the rest of your life has been ripped out from under you.

Would you believe that this:
Soundwave held his stare, looking at Jazz as if he were more beautiful than the baby crystal balancing in his hand and glistening as if the center of the galaxy were contained within its center. His gaze never wavered from Jazz, and as Jazz reached out a shaking hand to pluck the proto-crystal from Soundwave's palm, the corners of his mouth turned up gently, delicately, into his miniature smile.

Jazz's breath caught in his throat, clenching painfully around his gears as he tried to swallow. "Thank you," he whispered, refusing to look away from Soundwave's gaze.
is written about two Transformers, in their mech form? That this UST filled paragraph of longing is part of a story that will tie you up in knots? Not only because of the intensity of the sexual tension, but also because of the very clever mindfuck that drives the plot. When Chele asked the Pervs to check out Fracture Mechanics, I was in no way prepared for the depths of emotion--both positive and negative--that Asher119 could make me feel.

I’ve read a few Transformers one-shots before, but the Transformer(s) have always been in their holographic, human-like form. If you are not familiar with Transformers, but still want to read this amazing story, don’t fret. Everything makes sense with cursory knowledge of Transformers, and it doesn’t take long to picture Transformers in your head instead of humans.

As shown by the quote above and this one below, I find the intimate scenes--whether kissing, fucking, making love, or even dancing--to be incredibly hot. These are some freaking sexy and sensuous mechs!
"Dance with me, Soundwave," Jazz called out softly, motioning for Soundwave to join him.

"Negative," Soundwave said shyly, shaking his helm. His optics were still burning as they watched Jazz. "Watching preferable."

"Oh really?" Jazz grinned, slowly moving his way toward Soundwave, still grinding and swaying to the music as the song switched, a new blues tune belting out, this with more of a baseline then the previous. Jazz's hips picked it up immediately, swaying back and forth. Soundwave's optics blazed, catching sight immediately. "You like watching?" Jazz asked, dragging his words out slowly.

Silently, Soundwave nodded, frozen as Jazz slid up flush to his body. His engine surged, but his servos and gears locked up, paralyzed at the sensual way Jazz began grinding into his own hips. "Is this okay 'watching?'" Jazz whispered, smirking up at Soundwave.

Soundwave nodded dumbly. "Acceptable," he croaked, his engine beginning to race.

As intense and swoony as the loving happytimes in this fic are, the angsty times are just as intense combined with brutal, heart ripping out of your chest pain. There’s so much hurt and uncertainty

I finished reading this about two days ago, and I can’t stop thinking about the characters and the universe they inhabit. The characters completely came to life for me, and I’m not sure who I love the most. I love that Asher119 was able to create such rich main characters, but also well fleshed out supporting characters. I have a feeling they’ll all be sticking with me for days to come. Give it a try, you might find yourself using words like frag, interfacing, and spike or valve.
