Fandom Hopping - Star Trek - Veritas

Photobucket

Some may say we’re easily distracted.

Some may accuse us of giving up on Twilight (NEVER).

We say, “Why limit ourselves to just one fandom full of smut when there are soooo many other possibilities out there?!?!” And so we give you Fandom Polyamory, a place to poke your nose into another universe, meet some new characters, and enjoy all the pervy possibilities when a writer fucks with the universe someone else created. Don’t worry, friends, Edward & Co. will all be there waiting for you when you get back, but for now, take a walk with us down a different path.

Fic: Veritas
Author: TheProblematique
Summary: Captain James T. Kirk and Lieutenant Commander Spock are hereby charged with negligence and wanton misconduct due to their emotional compromise with each other.

So I’ve been watching and waiting on this story for the better part of a year now. It was rec’d to my by the lovely creampuffsteph, and oh how it was worth the wait! It has everything you’d want in a story: UST, humor, Yummy men, believable drama, and sexy times.

Now if you’re worried about not really being into Trek fret not. This story’s also got something for fans of all sizes. If you’re not familiar with Trek it does a good job of explaining the “need to know’s”. If you’ve seen the 2009 movie then you’ll have a little better understanding of this two silly men.. er Man/Vulcan hybrid. And if you’re a TOS fan like me, well think back to epi 1.20 and the giggles will come!

You may not know this (unless you follow me on Twitter or Tumblr, then okay you totally know this), but I love Star Trek fic; Kirk/Spock being my OTP to end all OTPs (though, if you really pull my leg I suppose I’d admit the RL counterparts of the Reboot come in a close second). There’s just something so inherently smart and sexy about the stories in this fandom that can’t be ignored. It’s not just because there’s all this sciencey stuff going on in the plots, unavoidable when your setting is SPACE. Or that such a thing as PON FARR exists as a perfect trope for hot, alien sex. No, it’s more than that. And a lot of that ~special something you find in K/S fic, at least in my opinion, has to do with the writers themselves. The authors in this fandom, you’ll find if you dive enough into the fic, are so intelligent and smart and I mean, it’s intimidating for others okay? But they take the basis of all that UST and OBVIOUS space husbandry found in The Original Series (and yes, even STXII…Spock loves to choke a bitch and Kirk is very willing, you can’t tell me otherwise) and extend it into more. Half the fun in the sexy times is the lead up, amirite?
TheProblematique is, well, masterful at the beautifully, painfully, slow building UST. I feel like all I have to say is, go to chapter 15: Light and Truth. Bathroom scene. The end. Bam. But that’s me getting ahead of myself.
SO!

Veritas is a story about the officials at Starfleet accusing Kirk and Spock about being emotionally compromised by the other. And then taking action about it. Which, let’s face it, makes sense if you’re familiar at all with TOS trek (and I really hope proves to be correct about the reboot crew). Even if you’re not a Trekkie, excuse me Trekker, and know next to nothing about the series, TheProblematique writes in a way that you glean information as you go, throwing in examples from fictional scenarios that definitely could be canon. And she doesn’t throw all these names, dates, and places in your face; assuming you’ll know wtf is going on. Her subtle allusions to TOS are, well uh…subtle.

The slow growth of something more is so compelling. Every chapter, as the name states, reveals some new piece of information; some insight into the feelings and motivations behind each male’s actions. The fact that there are some very real and scary consequences Kirk and Spock may have to face, there is even a tinge of the forbidden as they lose the battle between logic and emotion.

What I love about the story is the actual plot going on. Because at the start of Veritas, Kirk and Spock aren’t together. They don’t even acknowledge (at least to the other) that there are romantic feelings. But the problems they face as a result of Starfleet’s response to accusations, brings them together even more tightly than they already were. And forces truths to come to light.

I followed this fic from beginning to end, which means I had to endure waiting for updates. It was no small feat, having to sit idly by while I was DYING for more. Seriously, every chapter had me going but wait that can’t be the end of the chapter already nooooo. Lucky you don’t have to worry about that now. It’s complete and you should read it right away. Then go and read her other stuff. Seriously, Every Hug is so beautiful. And while it’s not smutty, it’s still worthy of your attention. Go now, read. Do it! Do it! Do it!

There is something amazingly intense about the way TheProblematique creates sexual tension and emotional connection between Spock and Kirk. Amazing because throughout much of the story, they’re not even allowed to touch. Not only would it draw attention to their simmering relationship, the Vulcan’s abilities as a touch telepath threaten to reveal more than either party is ready to face.
What they have no choice but to face, however, is their impending court martial wherein they are being accused of being emotionally compromised by one another.

Anyone who has seen TOS (The Original Series) or the new Star Trek reboot film is aware the lengths that Spock and Captain Kirk to to get one another our of a jam... Ie: life threatening situation with combative and murderous alien beings. Veritas puts the reader in the position of justifying their actions, and participating in their mutual denial that anything more than an intensely loyal professional relationship exists. We’re rooting for them to be found uncompromised even while internally begging them to compromise something..... like eachother’s personal space, Ie: Their pants.

This fic has everything you could want in a Star Trek Story: gravitational differentials, sex flowers, turbolift sexual tension, and the pants-on-fire hotness between Kirk and Spock that we all know deep down is canon. The bonus for us romantics, is the level of love and commitment that underlies every bold declaration of loyalty, honor and duty. The dawning on Kirk that his feeling for Spock run so deep that he would do anything to protect him. It’s like sunrise on a cloudy morning when the light has to burn through the clouds until it explodes in blinding light. Then it burns like a conflagration.

The resulting smut will melt your pants, if the UST hasn’t already killed you.

This is the perfect toe-dipping fic for the Twilight loving inner Trek Lover, or anyone who saw the reboot film and thought... you know... Quinto and Pine should have spent this movie fucking.

*Will you catch the adorable references to the spoon/fork hybrids that appear in the mess hall? We did. And we giggled. repeatedly

When Chele shared the link to Veritas last week, I jumped in with both feet, and felt the need to flail almost non-stop. The UST. The lulz. The tension. I could hardly stop smiling while reading this fic. I fell so in love with TheProblematique’s Kirk and Spock that I did little else but read until there weren’t any chapters left to read.

Jim and Kirk are being called before a Starfleet tribunal because they are accused of being emotionally compromised with one another. TheProblematique’s mixes humor and serious UST, as they work to fight the charges. Both characters have moments where they know there’s something between them, but they aren’t sure what it is. Sometimes it feels like a ‘who’s on first’ scenario, especially when other members of their crew are practically shining a strobe light on their mutual attraction. Chele’s talked about the epic UST. All I can add is that in the moments when they’re looking at each other and clearly feeling something intense, you will practically pant waiting for someone to GIVE IN to the attraction.

As sexy as intense as moments like this are:

"What…? Spock," he tried to clear his throat. "What do you want from me?"

Spock cocked his head slightly and the motion was fast and alien, strange in a way that was almost feline.

"You already know. Do not feign an innocence you do not possess."

It was that voice again. That voice Spock never used for anything else, the secret tone that was just for Jim.

Jim huffed a breath, helpless and so turned on it was painful. "Spock, you—"

And then Spock was kissing him.

There didn't seem to be an actual moment in between those two actions; one second Jim was speaking and the next Spock's tongue was licking its way inside his mouth and his teeth were gently nipping at Jim's lower lip and oh, yes, yes Jim could spend all night doing this, the last night—
the times when Spock mind melds with Kirk, or shares the unique form of Vulcan intimacy by touching fingers, pretty much set my pants on fire.

Spock and Kirk are infused with the spirit of both TOS and the movie reboot. When Kirk is clueless about how he feels about Spock, all I could see was William Shatner. When Kirk thinks to himself, ‘yeah, I used to be a real asshole,’ all I could see was Chris Pine. Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto inhabited my mind as Spock in equal portions as well.

From the subtle jokes to being outright doubled over with laughter to pure joy at these two figuring out what they are to one another, Veritas leaves me with a smile on my face days later.

This was the first time I’ve read any Spork, but I’m a long time Star Trek fan. In fact, my first date with my hubby was to Star Trek 6. *sigh* Considering modern day fan fiction came from Star Trek fan fiction, I knew I had to give this a try. Also, isn’t it cool that most of the ST ff writers were women in the early 1970s? Totally cool!!!

I rewatched the newly rebooted film this weekend so I could soak myself in Quinto and Pine loveliness, and I’m so glad I did. I saw the yumminess of these guys the entire time I was reading. Kirk keeps waxing poetic about the curve of Spock’s ear and jaw, and I totally can appreciate this. I need to suck on those ears myself.

I have a hard time with a lot of UST, but the trial that these guys were going through took me through easily. I rooted for them to be together. I wanted them to touch and kiss and love each other, yet as the story went on, they weren’t even allowed to be in the same room. That nearly broke my romantic heart.

Kirk and Spock are so into each other, yet cluelessly so. When they finally do come together, rainbows explode. Very fitting. Great story. Fun read.

THANK YOU for this rec! I was in desperate need of finding something totally new to read and this was perfect. Can you recommend anything else in this fandom, or any sites that have good Kirk/Spock recs? Thank you :)
